Mark Spencer won the Biggest Onion contest at the Payson Golden Onion Days festival with a 16.5-inch circumference onion, narrowly beating out two other onions with circumferences of 16 inches. Blair Andreason and his granddaughter Paige Andreason took second and third places respectively.

Bill Wright, Payson mayor, presided over the annual event in which the top three onions were unveiled to a crowd gathered in Memorial Park. Spencer said it took 90 days to grow the onion in his garden, and the secret ingredient was love. He said he would love to donate the champion bulb to the Nebo school district to feed the children, adding that when they chopped it up, he hoped they would cry with happiness.
