BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Arizona State is Cougars’ best win in 2021

Here’s our weekly power rankings of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 22 Arizona State (4-1 overall, 2-0 Pac-12 South)

Results: Jayden Daniels threw for 286 yards, including two long scoring passes to Ricky Pearsall in a convincing 42-23 road win at No. 20 UCLA.

Game On: Friday vs. Stanford (3-2, 2-1 Pac-12 North), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Stanford knocked off No. 3 Oregon 31-24 in overtime last week. … Arizona State leads the overall series with the Cardinal but Stanford has won the past two meetings: 20-13 in Tempe in 2018 and 34-24 at home in 2017.

2. Baylor (4-1 overall, 2-1 Big 12)

Plays BYU: Oct. 16 in Waco

Results: Boasting an offense averaging 42 points per game, Baylor couldn’t get going against No. 19 Oklahoma State and lost 24-14, with the Cowboys scoring the clinching touchdown on a fourth-and-goal play with just over two minutes to play.

Game On: Saturday vs. West Virginia (2-3, 0-2 Big 12), 11 a.m. MT (FS1)

What’s Up? Last week, Texas Tech kicked a late 31-yard field to drop West Virginia to 0-2 in Big 12 play. … The Mountaineers lead the overall series with Baylor 6-3 and won 27-21 in Morgantown last season.

3. USC (3-2 overall, 2-2 Pac-12 South)

Plays BYU: Nov. 27 in Los Angeles

Results: Kedon Slovis passed for three touchdowns and Drake London finished with 130 yards receiving and a score to lead USC past Colorado 37-14.

Game On: Saturday vs. Utah (2-2, 1-0 Pac-12 South), 6 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? After dominating Colorado, USC interim coach Donte Williams said, “That’s what we should do. That’s what we expect to do.” … The Trojans lead the overall series with Utah 13-6 and has won two in a row.

4. Utah (2-2 overall, 1-0 Pac-12 South)

Results: Bye

Game On: Saturday at USC (3-2, 2-2 Pac-12 South), 6 p.m. MT (FOX)

What’s Up? The Utes are ranked 26th in the country in total defense (302.2 yards per game) and 91st in total offense (366.5). … Utah last beat USC 41-28 at Salt Lake City in 2018.

5. Virginia (3-2 overall, 1-2 ACC Coastal)

Plays BYU: Oct. 30 in Provo

Results: Dontayvuin Wicks had a circus catch for a touchdown, Brennan Armstrong passed for 268 yards and Miami missed a 33-yard field goal as time expired as the Cavaliers held on for a 30-28 victory.

Game On: Saturday at Louisville (3-2, 1-1 ACC Atlantic), 1 p.m. MT (ACC Network)

What’s Up? Malik Cunningham threw for 309 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and two rushing scores but No. 24 Wake Forest kicked the game-winning field goal with 22 seconds left in a 37-34 Demon Deacons victory. … Louisville leads the overall series with Virginia 5-4 but the Cavaliers won last year’s meeting 31-17 in Charlottesville.

6. Boise State (2-3 overall, 1-1 MWC Mountain)

Results: Hank Bachmeier passed for 388 yards and four touchdowns but Boise State was outscored 18-3 in the third quarter and lost to Nevada 41-31.

Game On: Saturday at No. 10 BYU (5-0), 1:30 p.m. MT (ABC or ESPN)

What’s Up? Boise State is off to its slowest start since 2001 when it opened 2-3 and finished 8-4. … The Broncos lead the overall series with BYU 7-4, but the Cougars have won two straight, including a 51-17 rout in Boise last season.

7. Utah State (3-2 overall, 1-1 MWC Mountain)

Results: Utah State cut No. 13 BYU’s lead to seven points, 27-20, early in the fourth quarter but couldn’t stop Tyler Allgeier all night and lost to the Cougars 34-20.

Game On: Bye (Next game Oct. 16 at UNLV)

What’s Up? Quarterback Logan Bonner was 21 of 41 for 276 yards and two touchdowns, along with an interception, against BYU. … The Aggies were held to a season-low 22 yards on 35 carries against the Cougars.

8. Washington State (2-3 overall, 1-2 Pac-12 North)

Plays BYU: Oct. 23 in Pullman

Results: Washington State held Cal scoreless for the final three quarters and Jayden de Laura threw three touchdown passes as the Cougars topped the Bears 21-6.

Game On: Saturday vs. Oregon State (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12 North), 2 p.m. MT (Pac 12 Network)

What’s Up? The Beavers are in first place in the Pac-12 North after beating Washington 27-24 on a field goal as time expired. … Washington State leads the overall series with Oregon State 55-47-3 and has won the past seven meetings dating back to 2014.

9. South Florida (1-4 overall, 0-1 AAC)

Results: Tanner Mordecai threw two of his four touchdown passes in the first quarter as SMU blew past South Florida 41-17.

Game On: Bye (Next game Oct. 16 vs. Tulsa)

What’s Up? SMU has won the past two meetings with South Florida but the Bulls still lead the overall series 3-2. … South Florida’s Jimmy Horn Jr. caught five passes for 102 yards against the Mustangs.

10. Arizona (0-4 overall, 0-1 Pac-12 South)

Results: Bye

Game On: Saturday vs. UCLA (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12 South), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Arizona is 93rd in the country in total offense (363.2 yards per game). … UCLA leads the overall series with the Wildcats and won the last meeting 27-10 at Pasadena in 2020.

11. Georgia Southern (2-3 overall, 1-1 Sun Belt East)

Plays BYU: Nov. 20 in Provo

Results: Georgia Southern scored seven rushing touchdowns – two each from Logan Wright and Jalen White – in a 59-33 victory against Arkansas State, the first for interim head coach Kevin Whitley.

Game On: Saturday at Troy (2-3, 0-1 Sun Belt East), 4 p.m. MT

What’s Up? BJ Smith ran for 105 yards and a touchdown for Troy, which hung with South Carolina for three quarters before falling 23-14. … The Trojans lead the overall series 13-7 but Georgia Southern won the last meeting 20-13 at Statesboro in 2020.

12. Idaho State (0-4 overall, 0-2 Big Sky)

Plays BYU: Nov. 6 in Provo

Results: A 20-point second quarter sparked Northern Arizona to a 48-17 win against Idaho State.

Game On: Saturday vs. UC Davis (5-0, 2-0 Big Sky), 1 p.m. MT

What’s Up? The Idaho State defense allowed 650 yards to Northern Arizona. … A loss to UC Davis would drop the Bengals to 0-5 for the first time since 2009.
