In sports, timing is everything.

Undefeated Mountain View earned the No. 1 spot in the first Utah High School Activities Association Class 5A RPI of the season, which came out Saturday morning. The Bruins, who are 7-0 after grinding through a difficult preseason schedule, will be tested right away on Tuesday in Region 8 action against defending 5A champion Timpview. The two teams also met in last year’s 5A title match that went five sets.

The T-Birds are 6-1 and ranked No. 6 in the RPI. Maple Mountain is still undefeated at 8-0 and earned the No. 3 ranking. The Golden Eagles host Springville on Tuesday to open Region 9 play. Lehi at No. 7 and Spanish Fork at No. 9 are other Utah Valley teams in the Top 10.

Syracuse (4-0) is atop the Class 6A RPI while Skyridge (6-1) slips into the No. 2 spot just ahead of Lone Peak (5-2) at No 3.

Region 4 play begins on Tuesday and Lone Peak is at Skyridge in an early tone setter.

Pleasant Grove (3-2), which opens its Region 4 schedule hosting American Fork, settles in at No. 6.

The top eight seeds receive first-round byes in the state tournament, which begins Nov. 2 at school sites before moving to Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center for the second round, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.
