2022 Daily Herald High School Football Previews: Spanish Fork learning lessons from last season
Head Coach: Dustin Smith (3rd season)
2021 record: 7-3 overall, 4-1 Region 9
Playoffs: No. 6 seed, lost to No. 22 East 38-20 in 5A second round
Players to Watch: Josh Buck 5-11 205 Sr. RB, Aaron Dunn 6-8 270 So. OL, Isaac “Tubby” Reupena 6-0 265 Sr. DL/FB, Grant Barney 6-1 240 Sr. OL/DL
Outlook: The Dons tied for the Region 9 title last season and provided the only blemish on Springville’s regular-season record with a 36-28 victory early in September. This year, coach Dustin Smith has a solid core to build another contender.
“We don’t have as many returning seniors as last season but we hope to be able to lean on the ones we have,” Smith said. “Several of them have started for us for three years. We are a young team but I believe if we can learn from what will be a tough schedule we could be a really good team come playoffs.”
Josh Buck returns for his senior season after rushing for 1,054 yards and nine touchdowns last season and will run behind 6-foot-8 offensive lineman Aaron Dunn. Isaac “Tubby” Reupena had 16 tackles for loss last season on the defensive side.
“I believe our region is wide open this season,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a dog fight every game for everyone.”
Team captains: “The head coach selects our team captains,” Smith said. “The decision is based on off the field examples as well as on the field. I also look at leadership, passion and dedication to helping lift and inspire the other boys as well as all the students attending Spanish Fork High School. Captains are expected to be what we call a “Real Man”: Strong, courageous, compassionate, respectful, honest and kind.”
