The pairing of Nadia Templeman and Britta Broberg as Springville’s 2nd Doubles team turned out to be pure magic.

Templeman and Broberg, the No. 7 seed coming into the 5A state tournament, never doubted each other and finished off a terrific run at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City with a state title on Saturday.

The Red Devils duo knocked off No. 1 seed Alexandra Rawlings and Wilhelmina Hoggan of Olympus 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to claim what is believed to be the first-ever Springville High School girls state tennis title.

Greg Templeman, Nadia’s father, who has been the Red Devils girls tennis coach for the past eight years and at Springville for 12 years, said he’s never seen one.

“Nadia and Britta never broke,” Coach Templeman said. “They are always so kind and positive with each other. They remained calm during the whole tournament and had a quiet confidence about them. In the state final they discovered something in themselves they didn’t know existed until they were pushed up against the edge.”

After splitting the first two sets in the championship match, the Olympus team was just four points from winning the third set but Templeman and Broberg blocked out the large and vocal Titans crowd and battled back to take a 6-5 lead. At 40-30 Springville and match point in the next game, Nadia Templeman got aggressive at the net and her solid backhand volley evaded her opponent’s swing for the winner.

Templeman and Broberg weren’t matched up as partners early in the season as her father experimented with different combinations. Once together, the chemistry was obvious. They played well at the Region 8 championships and gained a lot of confidence during their state tournament run by pulling off an upset of No. 2 seed Lucy Nebeker and Caroline Larsen of Timpview (6-4, 6-1) in the quarterfinals.

“As soon as Britta and I became partners this season, we just worked really well together,” Nadia Templeman said. “We’re both pretty similar because we like to keep things positive. I had a good feeling coming into state. After we won our first couple of matches, I started to think, ‘Oh, my gosh, we might have a shot at this.’ It was nerve-wracking, but we stayed calm. I’m so happy the Britta was my doubles partner. She’s so amazing and I really love her.”

Nadia’s older sister, Emma, is a former Springville and BYU tennis player.

“It was always a big impact on me to see how hard she trained,” Nadia Templeman said. “My mom and dad worked so hard with me and I wanted to perform well and win for them.”

The Springville No. 1 Doubles team of Baylee and Olivia Park finished as state runner-ups in 2013 and 2014.

The only other Utah Valley finisher on Saturday was Timpview’s Kendall Woods and Ruby Call, who were the runner-up in 1st Doubles after falling to No. 1 seed Sophie DowDell and Morgan Longson of Olympus in the final 6-1, 6-0.

The Titans also claimed a champion in 3rd Singles (Emi DowDell) to win the 5A team title with 56 points, followed by defending state champion Woods Cross with 45. Timpview finished fifth with 22 points and Springville sixth with 20 points.
