BYU Football Opponent Power Rankings: Liberty proving it belongs

Here’s our weekly ranking of BYU football’s opponents with a look at their schedules and matchups.

1. No. 8 Oregon (6-1, 4-0 Pac-12)

Last results: Bo Nix threw for 278 yards and five touchdowns as No. 10 Oregon took care of No. 9 UCLA 45-30.

Game On: Saturday at Cal (3-4, 1-3 Pac-12), 1:30 p.m. MT (FOX or FS1)

What’s Up? Jack Plummer threw three touchdown passes in the second half but it wasn’t enough as Cal lost to Washington 28-21, the Bears third straight setback. … The Oregon-Cal series is very close, with the Bears holding a slim 42-41-2 advantage but the Ducks have won 11 of the past 13.

2. Arkansas (4-3, 1-3 SEC West)

Last results: Bye

Game On: Saturday at Auburn (3-4, 1-3 SEC West), 1 p.m. MT (SEC Network)

What’s Up? The Tigers were also off last week, with their last game a 48-34 loss to No. 9 Ole Miss on October 15. … Auburn leads the overall series with Arkansas 19-11-1 and have won six straight, including a 38-23 win last season in Fayetteville.

3. Liberty (7-1)

Last results: Dae Dae Hunter ran for 213 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown, as Liberty rolled up 547 total yards in a 41-14 rout of BYU.

Game On: Bye

What’s Up? Liberty is the only FBS Independent with fewer than three losses. … The Flames are off this week and will travel to Arkansas on November 5.

4. Baylor (4-3, 2-2 Big 12)

Last results: True freshman Richard Reese ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns as Baylor held off Kansas 35-23.

Game On: Saturday at Texas Tech (4-3, 2-2 Big 12), 5:30 p.m. MT (ESPN2)

What’s Up? Behren Morton threw two touchdown passes and Tahj Brooks ran for two more scores as Texas Tech blasted West Virginia 48-10. … Baylor leads the overall series with the Red Raiders 40-39-1, winning last season 27-24 in Waco.

5. Boise State (4-2, 3-0 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Boise State got ahead early and locked up the Air Force offense in a defensive struggle, finishing with a 19-14 victory.

Game On: Saturday vs. Colorado State (2-5, 2-1 MWC Mountain), 5 p.m. MT (FOX/FS1/FS2)

What’s Up? Avery Morrow ran 26 times for 147 yards and two second-half touchdowns to help Colorado State rally for a 17-14 victory against Hawaii. … Boise State is a perfect 11-0 against the Rams and won last season 28-19 in Fort Collins.

6. East Carolina (5-3, 3-2 AAC)

Last results: East Carolina scored 17 first-half points on three Central Florida turnovers on its way to a 34-13 victory.

Game On: Friday at BYU (4-4), 6 p.m. MT (ESPN2)

What’s Up? BYU surrendered 38 straight points in a 41-14 loss at Liberty. … The series between the Cougars and Pirates is tied at 1-1, with BYU winning 45-38 in Provo (2015) and East Carolina winning 33-17 in Greenville (2017).

7. Stanford (3-4, 1-4 Pac-12)

Last results: Three third quarter field goals by Joshua Karly proved to be the difference as Stanford rallied to top Arizona State 15-14.

Game On: Saturday at No. 15 UCLA (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12), 8:30 p.m. MT (ESPN)

What’s Up? Zach Charbonnet ran 20 times for 151 yards and a touchdown for No. 9 UCLA, which dropped a 45-30 decision to No. 10 Oregon. … The Bruins lead the overall series with Stanford 47-43-3, winning 35-24 in Palo Alto last season.

8. Notre Dame (4-3)

Last results: Tight end Michael Mayer caught six passes for 115 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown, and Isaiah Foskey blocked two punts as Notre Dame beat UNLV 44-21.

Game On: Saturday at No. 16 Syracuse (6-1, 3-1 ACC Atlantic)

What’s Up? No. 14 Syracuse forced four turnovers but it wasn’t enough, suffering its first loss with a 27-21 defeat at the hands of No. 5 Clemson. … Notre Dame leads the overall series with the Orangemen 7-3 and has won four in a row, including a 45-21 victory in 2020.

9. Wyoming (5-3, 3-1 MWC Mountain)

Last results: Titus Swen ran for 160 yards and three touchowns to lead Wyoming to a 28-14 victory against Utah State.

Game On: Saturday at Hawaii (2-6, 1-2 MWC West), 10 p.m. MT

What’s Up? Bryaden Schager passes for 173 yards and a touchdown as Hawaii lost at Colorado State 17-13. … Wyoming leads the overall series with Hawaii 15-11, but the Warriors won 38-14 in Laramie last season.

10. Utah State (3-5, 2-2 MWC Mountain)

Last results: The Aggies, down to their fourth-string quarterback, managed just 104 passing yards in a 28-14 loss to Wyoming.

Game On: Bye

What’s Up? New Mexico — Utah State’s next opponent — managed just eight first downs and 138 total yards in a 41-9 defeat to Fresno State. … The Aggies and Lobos will meet on November 5 in Logan.

11. South Florida (1-6, 0-3 AAC)

Last results: Bye

Game On: Saturday at Houston (4-3, 2-1 AAC), 11 a.m. MT (ESPN2)

What’s Up? Clayton Tune threw five touchdown passes to lead Houston past Navy 38-20. … The Cougars lead the overall series with South Florida 6-2 and have won six in a row, includuing a 54-42 shootout victory last season in Tampa.

12. Utah Tech (1-6, 0-3 WAC)

Last results: A late rally fell short as Utah Tech lost its fifth straight game, losing to Sam Houston State 18-13.

Game On: Saturday at Stephen F. Austin (5-3, 3-0 WAC), 3 p.m. MT

What’s Up? All-American Xavier Gipson set a school record with 256 receiving yards to go along with two touchdowns as the Jacks edged Southern Utah 41-38. … Last season, Stephen F. Austin earned a 37-20 victory against Utah Tech in St. George.
