BYU's Lauren Gustin attacks the basket against Carroll College at the Marriott Center on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

BYU forward Lauren Gustin was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, her second honor of the 2022-23 season, on Monday.

Gustin, a 6-foot-1, Salem, Utah product, led BYU to its fourth consecutive win with her second 20-20 performance of the year, scoring 21 points and pulling down a career-high 24 rebounds. The 24 rebounds also tied the Marriott Center record for most rebounds in a single game, accomplished twice before by BYU Hall of Famer Tina Gunn Robison in 1978.

The Katrina McClain Award candidate and two-time all-conference selection leads the WCC in every rebounding category and her 247 total rebounds are 97 more than the player in second place. She is sixth in points per game at 15.9.

Gustin has 15 double-doubles in 16 games this year, including two 20-20 games. Her double-doubles rank No. 2 nationally while her 15.4 rebounds per game also ranks No. 2. She leads the country in defensive boards with 11.2 and is three off of the NCAA lead in total rebounds.

An AP All-American Honorable Mention in 2021, Gustin was also named the WCC Player of the Week on Dec. 5.

BYU hits the road this week, traveling to LMU on Thursday, Jan. 12.

Bandaogo grabs WCC Player of the Week honors

Utah Valley sophomore center Aziz Bandaogo has been named the TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. It is the second time this season that Bandaogo has earned the honor. Bandaogo recorded a pair of double-doubles to lead Utah Valley to a pair of WAC road wins over UT Arlington and UTRGV last week to help the Wolverines push their win streak to 10 games and move to a perfect 4-0 in WAC play. He averaged 15.5 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks over the two games. He also shot 63.2 percent from the field and recorded an 87.5 percent clip from the free throw line. Bandaogo scored a career-high 18 points with 16 rebounds and a career-high six blocks in Utah Valley’s 75-61 win at UTRGV on Saturday night. He scored 13 points with 12 rebounds and three blocks in UVU’s 72-64 win at UT Arlington on Thursday night. Utah Valley continues WAC road play at California Baptist on Wednesday night. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and will be broadcast live on ESPN 960 AM radio.

Cougar women’s volleyball adds Utah State transfer

BYU women’s volleyball head coach Heather Olmstead has announced the addition of transfer setter Kalia Thunstrom.

A 5-foot-10 junior, Thunstrom has spent the last two seasons in Logan at Utah State. Playing in 41 sets between the 2021 and 2022 seasons, she recorded 163 assists, 69 digs, three kills and three service aces for the Aggies.

Thunstrom is a Murrieta Mesa High School graduate out of Murrieta, California, and holds the career, single-season and single-match ace records, as well as the single-season assist record at Murrieta Mesa. She also played five club seasons with Forza 1.

The transfer setter will join four members of the Cougars’ 2023 recruiting class on campus beginning in BYU’s winter semester: outside hitter Addison Benson, setter Silina Damuni, middle blocker/opposite hitter Mia Lee and libero Brielle Miller.

Kobe Tran back for Cougar tennis

BYU men’s tennis head coach Dave Porter announced the addition of Kobe Tran to the team’s roster today. Tran was a member of the team for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons–which included an 8-3 singles record his freshman year–before taking a break from tennis.

Tran returns with two years of eligibility remaining. He joins the team ahead of BYU’s first dual match on Jan. 20, which he will be able to compete in.

“I am thrilled to have Kobe Tran back,” Coach Porter said. “He is a wonderful young man who is working hard on his academics and tennis. He will make a positive addition to the team.”
