Everything came up extra bases for Lehi in the fifth inning.

The Pioneer bats came alive with six hits, including two triples and two doubles, in a seven-run fifth and then ended its 5A State Tournament bracket play game with Viewmont via the ten-run rule in the sixth, powering to a 13-3 victory at BYU’s Miller Park on Monday.

No. 4 seed Lehi (21-6) came into the bottom of the fifth nursing a 4-2 lead but sent 12 batters to the plate. The two triples and two doubles came back-to-back-to-back-to back as the Pioneers locked in offensively to send Region 5 champion Viewmont (21-6) to an elimination game on Tuesday.

“This is a big ball park,” Lehi coach Jason Ingersoll said. “We just teach the kids that we’re not trying to get the ball out. If it goes out, great. We were just trying to hit line drives and get the next guy up and let them do their job. Hitting is contagious. We got a few hits, got some doubles and started scoring runs. Then everybody think they can do it, which they can.”

The Vikings broke on top first, tapping Pioneers starter Dawson Rodak with doubles from Cal Miller and Braxton Brenestall, combined with a Lehi error, for two runs. The Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the first after McGuire Madsen doubled and came home on Mays Madsen’s ground out.

Lehi retook the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on four hits including an RBI single by Braden Willes and a sacrifice fly by McGuire Madsen, for a 4-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, Mays Madsen smashed a triple to drive in two runs and Jake Olsen followed with another triple to bring home another run for a 7-2 lead. Jackson Brousseau knocked a double to drive in run and Tysen Elswood added another RBI double for a 9-2 advantage.

“We got into a nice rhythm,” Brousseau said. “Mays started us off great with a triple and after that we just kept hitting. So we just kept stringing hits together and that put up runs. We have a great bond with each other and it’s fun to be around these guys every day.”

The Pioneers led 11-2 heading into the sixth and after holding Viewmont scoreless in the top of the inning ended things in their at-bat. With the bases loaded, Brousseau ripped a two-run single and was mobbed by his teammates at first base.

Olsen was 3 for 5 and Brousseau 3 for 4 at the plate for Lehi, which banged out 16 hits. Rodak pitched 5 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing three hits.

The Pioneers will play in the championship round on Tuesday against No. 17 seed Woods Cross, a 1-0 upset winner against No. 8 Brighton on Monday.

No. 3 Salem Hills 4, No. 6 Jordan 2

The Skyhawks pushed across two runs in the top of the first and rode a terrific performance on the mound from Nolan Miller to defeated the Beetdiggers in the late game on Monday.

Salem Hills led 4-0 heading into the fifth inning when rain caused a long delay. Jordan managed to score twice in the sixth to cut the deficit in half but could get no closer.

Miller struck out eight and scattered eight hits (all singles) in earning a complete game victory.

The Skyhawks (23-5) move on to play No. 2 Timpanogos on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Jordan (19-9) will face Orem in an elimination game.

Canon Downey scored a first-half goal off a free kick and that held up as No. 1 seed Wasatch secured a spot in the 5A title game with a 1-0 win against No. 12 Skyline on Monday at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman.

The Wasps (16-1-0), who won the 5A title in 2021, will play No. 3 Alta (14-3-0) for this year’s championship on Thursday at American First Field in Sandy. Brock Bennion scored a goal in double overtime to send the Hawks into the title match.
