When the BYU football team came on the field at LaVell Edwards Stadium against the Washington Huskies on Saturday afternoon, Cougar fans were excited about the throwback uniforms.
However, the excitement quickly turned to frustration as BYU commited a few costly penalties that allowed Washington to go down and score on multiple drives in the first half. Add on the play when BYU quarterback Zach Willson fumbled on a sack, and Washington scooped up the ball and scored a touchdown, and Twitter was on fire with negativity.
A drive to end the half resulted in a 54-yard field goal by Jake Oldroyd to cut the Huskies' lead to 12 at the break.
The opening drive for the Cougars looked promising until Dax Milne fumbled and the Huskies recovered the ball. Washington then turned the turnover into points, scoring a touchdown on a 35-yard pass.
After a Max Tooley interception, Wilson found Matt Bushman in the endzone to end the third quarter.
Washington beat BYU, 45-19.
Low-key would love to see BYU in Pac-12— b (@john_etsunami) September 21, 2019
It’d be really nice if BYU for once didn’t have to play from behind the entire game.— Chase D. Troutner (@Captain_Strongo) September 21, 2019

Against these type of caliber P5 opponents, BYU has to play an almost perfect game in order to hang. They are playing far from that with a costly turnover, undisciplined penalties, and dropped passes. Still a lot of football to go but BYU needs to respond on this drive.— David Nixon (@D_Nixon) September 21, 2019
BYU currently has 65 yards of offense and 40 yards of penalties.— Josh Kirshenbaum (@J_Kirshenbaum) September 21, 2019
BYU is wearing jerseys from the 60’s and playing like the teams from the 60’s as well. 💩— Ryan (@ryfish65) September 21, 2019
BYU went 38-58 in the 60s. Maybe not the best decade for a throwback.— Danny (@dahomes) September 21, 2019
Is BYU is not good enough to weather such costly mistakes or is because BYU is not actually good they make costly mistakes?— Zach Bloxham (@zblox) September 21, 2019
The 'throwback music' at the BYU game has been brutal. Lullaby level 80s music.— Mitchell Marshall (@MitchAMarshall) September 21, 2019
BYU and Utah both playin like they drunk on koolaide this weekend— Mac (@Mac_Jazz) September 21, 2019
Man Washington is going to score on every possession the way this is going. BYU has no answer at all. This is gonna get uglier folks....— Jared Walch (@JaredWalch) September 21, 2019

If BYU didn’t shoot themselves in the foot offensively this game would be much closer. BYU QB Zach Wilson has been playing a really good game.— Jake Heaps (@jtheaps9) September 21, 2019
Critical 2 minute drive here for both teams.
BYU’s effort is likened to that painted Y cover-up at midfield. You tried. Sort of.— Peter Case (@spaffoo) September 21, 2019

BYU is a solid team, but Washington is just flat-out better.— Michael Bayer (@mbayer1248) September 21, 2019
Punt return for a TD to put the Huskies up 38-12 feels like the nail in the coffin, even though there's still 25 minutes to play.
When Aaron Fuller is taking punts to the house, you know Joseph Smith is mad at somebody on the BYU football team. Broke the honor code or something, had some caffeine.— Paul Somerstein (@psomerstein) September 21, 2019
Took a lap around LES during halftime. Saw someone dressed head to toe as Merlin the Magician. Also saw two Washington fans having a discussion with police about a "banned substance."— Austin Horton (@austinhorton) September 21, 2019
Other than that, it's been as expected here today. UW is really good at football things.
My enthusiasm for BYU football usually lasts about 4-5 weeks into the season. My patience for the INCREDIBLE amount of mental errors just can’t take it after that 😑— nick johansen (@johansen_nick) September 21, 2019
At this point, you're looking for players who are fighting and playing hard. You have to find out who is willing to keep believing and playing hard despite what the scoreboard says.— Jeff Hansen (@rakoto10) September 21, 2019

1. Do not overreact Cougar fans! UW is probably the best team on our schedule this year and will be competing with UO and USC for the #pac12
2. Shooting yourself in the foot over and over will always result in an ugly loss
3. We'll be ok!#WashvsBYU

@BYUfootball Let’s just shake this one off. 10-2 is a REAL possibility! We know how good we can be when we execute. Few teams can do what Byu is asked to do.
This is our reality, fan support shouldn't hinge on the impossible.
