When Cougar fans tuned into the BYU football game against San Diego State on Saturday night, they might have expected to see Ty Detmer or Jamal Willis on the field at SDCCU Stadium.
The Cougars came out in their royal blue road uniforms, which looked similar to the uniforms that Detmer and Willis wore in classic battles with the Aztecs in the early 90's.
But unlike those classic shootout games where scores often reacted into the 40's and 50's, San Diego State leads BYU at halftime, 7-3.
Fans were frustrated by penalties, sluggish offense performances and allowing the Aztecs to score a touchdown with 13 seconds left in the half.
San Diego State drove into BYU territory on its first drive, and kicked a field goal.
BYU missed a 26-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter, and the Aztecs took the ball down the field to tack on a field goal of their own.
San Diego State beat BYU, 13-3.
San Diego St vs BYU makes me think of Marshall Faulk vs Ty Detmer— Mike Lilje (@MikeBCSN) December 1, 2019
MOAR WHEEL ROUTES. Love Katoa catching passes out of the backfield— Robby McCombs (@rtmccombs) December 1, 2019
Man BYU is ha being a hard time finishing drives. Gotta get something going— Jewkbox Hero 🎷🏆 (@LanceJewkes) December 1, 2019
Apparently the BYU O were the only people who knew that blitz was coming.— Teeps (@SportsGuyRyan) December 1, 2019
Wish I could say I've been impressed by the Aztec D, but truthfully I'm more frustrated by the lack of execution and intensity on offense... LET'S GO!!!— Ryan Hancock (@rhancoug17) December 1, 2019
This first half of the BYU football game has been boring and really sloppy offensively for BYU. No sustained drives yet. It seems like the offense struggles initially when ZW is at QB. Baylor Romney seemed to always score on his opening drives.— #BeatSDSU (@SeanHowardBYU) December 1, 2019
I can’t remember what the exact number is, but I remember Bronco telling us the stat that 70%+ of drives that have a penalty in them end up in a punt. Holding true for BYU tonight. Killers.— David Nixon (@D_Nixon) December 1, 2019
You’re gonna drop 8 and not pressure the QB and still let a TE just run free right down the middle of the field. Amazing scheme BYU.— Tommy (@Irieska) December 1, 2019
Couple of notes for @BYUfootball. Haven’t been impressed with Wilson’s performance. Poor decision making by him. Coaches need to call timeout before delay of game penalty. We’re still only rushing three players and not putting pressure on the quarterback. #byufootball #stupidplay— Dan Smith (@dan_smithforbyu) December 1, 2019
Well that was a riveting half of football. Can #BYU PLEASE figure out some pass protection here, so Wilson isn't getting hit by 2+ guys on every pass play? Also, we're doing a really good job of giving the freshman SDSU QB plenty of time to make reads and gain lots of confidence.— Andrew Lord (@lordandrew1) December 1, 2019
BYU needs to clean up the penalties. It’s not like it’s a hostile environment.— OldSchoolBYU (@OldSchoolBYU) December 1, 2019
And how about having/finding the hot receiver when SDSU sends the blitz
Imagine cheering for a “big-time” program. Where you look forward to nationally televised games late in the yr, you see your team move up/down the Top 25 & you routinely beat your rival w/superior talent and coaching. No thanks. I’ll take #BYU losing to #SDSU. 😒 pic.twitter.com/MDUTgJWGlk— Sam (@eldorko80) December 1, 2019
BYU is in trouble. SDSU getting whatever they want now— Tyler Ormond (@TyOrmond) December 1, 2019
BYU fumbles on a trick play because the BYU team that showed up against USF and Toledo showed up tonight. Heck, the BYU team that showed up tonight might be worse than the team that showed up against USF and Toledo. Sitake has to figure out how to fix this.— El Gato Blanco (@ElGatoBlancoJD) December 1, 2019
It's a weird feeling to see SDSU with 180 yards but feel outmatched up to this point.— Jarom Jordan (@jaromjordan) December 1, 2019
1.6 yds/rush, 3 pts, -2 turnover margin will do that.
BYU is down 10-3 in the 4th quarter.
UMass ain’t walking through that door...— Aaron Taylor (@bluebloodartist) December 1, 2019
Congrats Aztecs. 9-3. Really good year. Go win your bowl game. That defense is unreal.— Nick Lee (@NickLee51) December 1, 2019
BYU is maddeningly inconsistent with this coaching staff. Can beat ranked USC and Boise St and win @ Tennessee but picks and chooses when to show up.
What a pathetic performance by the byu offense— Chad (@ChadT_26) December 1, 2019
