When members of the BYU softball team erupted from the dugout and began sliding on their stomachs across the tarp covering the infield at Gail Miller Field, the jig was up.

After a 90-minute rain delay, school officials opted to move the series with Loyola Marymount to Saturday, with a tentative 1 p.m. start. The two teams are tied for the lead in the West Coast Conference with 11-1 records. The attempt will be made to play all three games on Saturday if necessary, but if one teams wins the first two that would make the third game academic.

BYU and Loyola Marymount are playing not only for the WCC regular-season title but the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars are gunning for their fifth straight WCC title and have qualified for the NCAA’s 13 straight years.

The NCAA selection show is Sunday.
