Women's volleyball NCAA regional finals 31

Brigham Young University libero Mary Lake (18) and setter Lyndie Haddock-Eppich (6) after the Cougars swept the University of Texas in an NCAA regional final match Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018, at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo.

Looks like BYU senior Mary Lake is going to get some international experience this summer.

Lake was invited to participate in a tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team headed to the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Nations League, and on Monday was listed as one of two liberos on the 25-player roster.

The VNL is a 16-country league that includes 15 pool play matches for each country spread over five consecutive weeks. The top five teams from the preliminary round will compete in the VNL Final Six along with host China from July 3-7.

Each country can designate 14 players from the 25-player roster to compete in each preliminary week and the Final Six. Rosters can change each week. The U.S. will host Korea, Germany and Brazil in early June at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The U.S. team — coached by Karch Kiraly — won the inaugural VNL last year.

Lake — soon to be a four-year starter at BYU — was selected as a second team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American last season and the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The Cougars were ranked No. 1 for much of the season and advanced to the NCAA Final Four last December.
