Wolverines drop two to CSU Bakersfield

OREM — CSU Bakersfield secured a series sweep over Utah Valley with a 7-3 win in the series finale on Sunday at UCCU Ballpark.

With the loss, Utah Valley falls to 12-22 overall and 4-8 in WAC play. CSUB improves to 13-21 overall and 4-5 in league play.

Bakersfield was first to get on the scoreboard as Daniel Carrizosa singled up the middle to open the top of the third inning. Evan Berkey then single through the right side to send Carrizosa to third. Jake Ortega then hit an RBI single to shortstop to send Carrizosa across the plate to give the ‘Runners a 1-0 lead.

Utah Valley’s Pacen Hayes tied things up in the bottom of the fifth as he led off with a solo shot over the left center field fence to tie the game, 1-1. With two outs, David Modler walked and then scored on a Trevor Peterson double to right field. The two fifth-inning runs gave the Wolverines a 2-1 advantage.

Bakersfield responded in the top of the sixth as Andrew Penner got things going with a single to center. Ryan Koch then tripled to right center to send Penner across the plate. Jassen Oliver followed up the Koch triple with a single to left center, scoring Koch from third. The two runs put CSUB back on top, 3-2.

After holding UVU scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, CSUB added another four runs. Cole Valletta opened the seventh with a single to third. Berkey then singled through the left side to advance Valletta from second to third. Ortega reached on a fielder’s choice to first that would score Valletta. Penner hit a single to advance Ortega to second and Berkey to third. Koch then walked to advance the runners and score Berkey. Luis Martinez then singled up the middle to score Ortega for the ‘Runners fourth run of the inning, giving CSUB a 7-2 lead.

The Wolverines tacked on a late run as Paul Estrada hit a single up the middle to send Jake Berry home to cut the CSUB lead to a 7-3 advantage.

Berry and Estrada led the Wolverines with 2-for-4 performances at the plate. Estrada had a triple and an RBI.

Elijah Parks led the ‘Runners on the mound, working 6.0 innings with two strikeouts. He gave up only two runs on the day to pick up his third win of the season. Davonte Butler pitched the final 3.0 innings to pick up his first save of the year.

Kaden Schmitt pitched 6.0 innings with four strikeouts. He gave up only three runs on the day. Marco Briones worked 2.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts. Briones did not allow a run and gave up only two hits.

The Roadrunners left eight runners stranded and hit into four double plays on the day. UVU left seven runners on base and hit into three double plays.
