CHICAGO – Utah Valley University notched its second straight win at Chicago State University, 9-4, to clinch the series on Friday afternoon at Cougar Stadium. The win also secures the Wolverines' best record in WAC play since joining the conference in 2014.
Five different players had two hits apiece for the Wolverines (32-21 overall, 17-9 WAC), including Jordan Schlehuber, who also had two RBI and scored two runs. Schlehuber also made an impact with his glove, taking two hits -- and at least that many runs -- away from the Cougars (13-41, 6-20) with a pair of diving plays at third.
Utah Valley trailed 3-2 in the fourth when Schlehuber drove an 0-2 pitch into the corner in left, scoring two runs for a 4-3 lead. Schlehuber later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
The teams traded runs in the fifth before the Wolverines pulled away with three in the eighth. Jake Atkinson had an RBI single, Stone Ramsey a sacrifice fly and Greyson Bogden tripled home the final run.
Patrick Wolfe lasted five innings and struck out five while allowing four runs on six hits. He picked up the win and moved to 2-3 on the season.
Trevor Howell, Craig Brinkerhoff, Mark Krueger and Gothberg were the other Utah Valley hitters with two hit games. Howell and Gothberg also scored two runs apiece.
The series – and regular season – conclude on Sunday with an 11 a.m. MDT start. With a win Utah Valley would secure the number three seed in next week's WAC Tournament and play the 7 p.m. game on Wednesday against the No. 6 seed.
