No. 25 Stanford defeated UVU 28-6 in Orem, on Saturday afternoon.

OREM — Utah Valley University was a takedown or reversal short of putting some suspense into its match against Stanford, but to pull off an upset of a top 25 team takes perfect execution in close matches, and that’s where the Wolverines fell short.

No. 25 Stanford beat UVU 28-6 on Saturday afternoon to conclude a challenging weekend for UVU, who lost to No. 20 Oregon State 36-6 on Friday night.

“I thought some of our guys did some things a little bit better than what we’ve done against tough competition the last couple of times we’ve wrestled ranked teams,” said UVU coach Greg Williams. “There were some matches I felt like we should have won [184 and 197]. I felt like if we technically would have wrestled better matches there we would have won those.”

The afternoon began when Stanford’s Zach Nevills outlasted Ross Taylor (184) 5-4 in overtime. Taylor led 3-0 but fell when Nevills used an escape in the first tiebreaker period to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead.

Stanford scored wins in the next two matches to go up 9-0. Garet Krohn beat Derek Thomas (3-1) at 197 and Nathan Butler won a 6-2 decision over Adam Fager at heavyweight.

The highlight of the match for UVU came at 125 when Chasen Tolbert upset No. 15 ranked Evan Silver. Tolbert scored all of his points in the second period. He scored a 3-0 decision thanks to an escape and a takedown. The win helped Tolbert improve his record to 12-5 on the year and it was his second win over a top 20 opponent. He beat No. 8 David Terao of American earlier in the year.

Tolbert’s win cut the Cardinal lead to 9-3, but Stanford pulled out another close match at 133 when Connor Schram edged Jade Rauser 5-4 to push the lead to 12-3.

Schram’s win proved to be a turning point since UVU’s Matthew Ontiveros beat Mason Pengilly 3-0 in the next match to cut the lead to 12-6, but that was as close as the Wolverines could get because Stanford closed out the match by winning four straight.

"This is a great win for Chasen, which should help solidify his top-25 ranking," said Williams said. "There were some improvements that need to be made in a couple of areas, however. There is still plenty to work to do individually this next month."

The Wolverines (1-1 Western Wrestling Conference) will now hit the road next weekend for the first time since Dec. 21 to face South Dakota State and North Dakota State in conference action.
