Utah Valley University redshirt junior Taylor LaMont and former Wolverine and current Brunson UVRTC competitor Dylan Gregerson both made the U.S. U23 World Team on Thursday after both won UWW U23 National Championships in Greco-Roman competition.
LaMont won his 2021 UWW U23 National Title at 55 kilos after going a perfect 4-0 on the mat on Thursday, while the former Wolverine Gregerson won his U23 title at 60 kg after going 5-0. By both winnings U23 Greco-Roman National Titles, both LaMont and Gregerson have earned a trip to compete at the U23 Greco-Roman World Championships that will be held in November in Serbia.
“Taylor and Dylan both wrestled great today. They stayed in great position on their feet and were able to dominate in par terre both offensively and defensively,” head UVU coach Greg Williams said. “We are excited that they both will be able to travel together to Serbia. They have been great training partners for each other.”
The 2021 125-pound UVU All-American LaMont started his day with a 10-2 tech fall over Anthony Illinois of Illinois to advance to the semifinals. LaMont then defeated Joseph Harrison too by tech fall (8-0) to advance to a best-of-three championship series against Ohio State’s Brady Koontz (Ohio RTC). LaMont held the upper hand in each of the first two bouts against Koontz as he defeated him by scores of 3-1 and 4-0 to win the U23 title and earn a spot on the U.S. U23 World Team and a trip to the 2021 U23 World Championships. Coming into the Thursday’s action, Brady Koontz was ranked No. 2 at 55 kg on the National Team and is a three-time age-group World Team member. This marks the seventh time that LaMont has qualified for a World Team in his age group.
The former Wolverine Gregerson opened his 2021 U23 Greco Nationals run with back-to-back-to-back technical fall victories over Boo Drydan of Gopher Wrestling Club (9-0), Thomas Hicks of Tennessee (8-0) and Camden Russell of MWC Wrestling Academy (8-0) to reach a best-of-three championship series against Dylan Koontz of Ohio State (Ohio RTC). Gregerson too got the best of a Koontz brother on the day by winning his first two bouts over Dylan Koontz by scores of 9-6 and 7-5 to also qualify for the 2021 U23 World Championships and earn a spot on the U.S. U23 World Team. The championship marks the second straight U23 title for Gregerson, as he previously won the 2020 U23 title at 63 kilos.
The 2021 UWW U23 World Team Trials will continue with freestyle competition on Friday and Saturday in Lincoln. The 2021 U23 World Championships will take place Nov. 1-7 in Belgrade, Serbia.
LaMont capped his stellar weekend with a second-place finish at U23 Nationals in freestyle competition.
With Saturday’s runner-up finish at the UWW U23 Freestyle Nationals at 57 kilos, LaMont has also been named an alternate for the U.S. U23 World Team in freestyle competition.
