Burr-fect comeback — Timpview rallies past Springville

By Neil K. Warner - Daily Herald - | Oct 13, 2011

Timpview linebacker Josh Burr is the first one to admit that one play does not decide the outcome of the game.

Over the course of four quarters, there are numerous turning points.

What he did with his team behind in the third quarter against Springville may not have won the game, but no one could argue that it changed it.

His key interception and long return set up the go-head touchdown and proved to be a pivotal play in Timpview’s 31-14 win over Springville on Thursday night.

Judging by the final score it was hard to imagine that Springville was in control of the game midway through the third quarter. After Caleb McCray scored on a 2-yard run with 6:35 left in the quarter, the Red Devils had a 14-3 lead.

But Timpview answered with 28 straight points to win going away.

“It (interception) was a momentum shifter, but this is a team game. One play, or one player doesn’t win a game. One play or one player doesn’t make a season,” Burr said. “It’s a team thing. I loved how our offense got going after that. If I can give them the spark, it’s all good.”

After McCray gave Springville the lead, Timpview quarterback Jake Lloyd found Justin Fulton for a 36-yard touchdown pass a minute later.

The Red Devils then mounted a drive, but it was stopped when Burr picked off a pass at the Springville 40 and returned it to the six.

Burr’s big play set up a 6-yard run from Lloyd to give Timpview a 17-14 lead on the final play of the third quarter.

Timpview now had the momentum and nothing could stop the T’Birds. When a Springville punt pinned the T’Birds inside their own five, Brayden Galland broke off a 47-yard run to give Timpview some breathing room. Galland was then rewarded when Lloyd found him for a 4-yard touchdown pass with 7:58 left in the game.

Springville was already down one offensive weapon when it lost running back Mitch Paystrup in the first quarter to a shoulder injury, but then the Red Devils saw quarterback Steve Bate leave the game with an injury in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the T’Birds continued to pile up the point when Lloyd threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Dax Raymond with 2:10 left to play. Bentley Wilson then sealed the win with an interception to start the celebration and avenge last year’s loss in the playoffs to Springville.

“You hear the word revenge. I’m not a revengeful person, it’s more about respect and that’s something they took away from out last year,” said Timpview coach Louis Wong. “We wanted go down there and get it back and bring it back home and that’s what we did in the second half.”

Timpview’s offense never could get going in the first half. The only points the T’Birds could generate came from a Tyler Solorzano 38-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Springville answered when Bate dropped back and hit Jalon Miyasaki in stride down the sideline for a 67-yard touchdown pass with 5:30 left in the half.

Springville could have had more. The Red Devils moved the ball to the Timpview 11 in the first quarter, but had their drive stopped when Timpview’s Bobby Hagedorn intercepted a pass in the end zone.

Springville threatened again at the end of the half. The Red Devils completed a pass at the Timpview 25, but fumbled with seconds left in the half to keep the score 7-3 at the half.

Those missed opportunities would prove costly for Springville, who dropped to 2-4 in region play while Timpview improved to 6-0.
