2014 prep football preview: Maple Mountain

By Neil K. Warner daily Herald - | Aug 21, 2014

Head Coach: Brad Burtenshaw

2013 record: 3-7 overall, 2-4 Region 8 (6th)

Playoffs: None

Players to watch: Jaren Hall Jr. QB, Jake Mafi Sr. WR/DB, Cole Casper Sr. RB, Jake Dixon Sr. WR/DB, Chandler Schramm Sr. OL/DL, Jordan Larson Jr. LB

Outlook: With 10 returning starters back on offense and six on defense, Maple Mountain is hoping last year’s playoff absence will be a one-year exception.

The Golden Eagles had been making steady progress since they were winless in their inaugural season in 2009. They won three games in 2010, seven in 2011 and were 9-2 in 2012 before dipping to 3-7 last year.

“We’re excited for this group,” said Maple Mountain coach Brad Burtenshaw. “They did a pretty good job last year but we were just young. Hopefully this year they will develop. We have high expectations.”

Now the Golden Eagles are focusing on building on their strengths.

“We’re experienced, we have good athletes who have some speed,” Burtenshaw said. “We lost some close games last year but we learned a lot. We have a really tough schedule this year but that’s something we’re excited about. To be a good team we know we have to play good teams.”

Zuke says: Offensive lineman Mitch Holmes should enjoy the view this year as the Golden Eagles rack up the points.
