Valley Top 5: Top teams ranked heading into 2022
Each week the Daily Herald ranks the Top 5 boys basketball, girls basketball, and boys and girls wrestling teams in Utah Valley.
BOYS BASKETBALL
1. Skyridge (6-1)
Opens Cactus Jam in Phoenix vs. Start (Ohio) on Monday.
2. Orem (7-0)
Tigers looking to keep perfect mark at Idaho tournament.
3. Payson (9-0)
Four players averaging in double figures, led by 6-foot junior guard Isaac Wolfe (14 ppg).
4. Pleasant Grove (8-2)
Vikings won Spaulding Silver Division at Tarkanian Classic with 71-60 victory vs Trinity Leadership, Texas.
5. Westlake (6-3)
Thunder head to Eagle Holiday Classic this week.
Girls basketball
1. Lone Peak (6-0)
The Knights have three more non-league games before Region 4 starts.
2. Westlake (9-0)
The Thunder defense is stifling, only allowing opponents 27.3 points per game.
3. Timpview (7-1)
The Thunderbirds look to be ready for the challenges of 2022.
4. Lehi (7-1)
The Pioneers will be challenged at their Idaho tournament this week.
5. Skyridge (7-2)
The Falcons face a huge test against Fremont on Thursday.
Boys wrestling
1. Pleasant Grove
Vikings set sights on 11th state title in last 10 years.
2. Payson
Lions must develop total team depth to catch Uintah and win 5A.
3. Westlake
Thunder have good mix of great young talent and senior leadership.
4. Wasatch
Wasps have firepower, so winning a trophy is not out of question.
5. Mountain View
Bruins relying a bit more on depth this year and star power.
Girls wrestling
1. Westlake
Thunder appear unbeatable in 6A.
2. Maple Mountain
Golden Eagles are team to beat in 5A.
3. Springville
Red Devils have talent to contend in 5A wrestling wars.
4. Mountain View
Bruins have good depth and are trophy contenders in 5A.
5. ALA
Eagles definitely a team to beat in 1A-3A wrestling classification.
