Head Coach: Weston Zabriskie (4th season)

2021 record: 6-5 overall, 5-2 Region 7

Playoffs: No. 11 seed, lost to No. 22 East 35-7 in 5A first round

Players to Watch: Cooper Thomson 6-2 190 Sr. QB, Dillion Linford 5-10 230 Sr. OL, KJ Fisher 6-0 200 Sr. WR/LB, Bucky Seely 5-10 165 Sr. DB

Outlook: The time has come.

It can require patience for a new high school to get to where it wants to be in all sports but that can particularly be the case in football, since it has so many participants. But Cedar Valley head coach Weston Zabriskie believes this year should see some payoff for the Aviators.

“I expect to see a very competitive team,” Zabriskie said. “This is the first full four-year class at Cedar Valley and they are comfortable with our systems and how things work. They have had a great off season and are ready to go.”

He believes that his players, particularly the seniors, have bought into the team-wide focus on continual improvement.

“Preparation is a day at a time,” Zabriskie said. “I know that sounds cliché, but for us the focus is on getting at least 1% better every day. We take a consistent approach to each week and practice, so that way the kids know what to expect. The kids know what it takes each week to get ready for Friday nights.”

He believes that putting in the work will set Cedar Valley up to be even better as it battles in Class 5A’s Region 7 in 2022.

Team captains: “To become a Captain or a member of the leadership council you must first submit an application online,” Zabriskie said. “The application is then scored from 1-10 based on effectiveness. Each player that applies is then put on a ballot. The team then votes for four captains, ranking them 1-4 based on who they feel will be the most effective. Then the captains are chosen based on points from application, votes, coaches recommendations, experience and other things. Then we have the four captains and 11 other members on the leadership council.”
