2022 Daily Herald High School Football Previews: Westlake needs to reload

Head Coach: Louis Wong (7th season)

2021 record: 4-8 overall, 1-4 Region 4

Playoffs: No. 19 seed, lost to No. 5 Skyridge 58-14 in 6A second round

Players to Watch: Carter Quiring 6-0 170 Sr. WR, Aidan Hammond 5-9 155 Sr. WR/RB, Jace Mackey 6-2 278 Sr. OL/DL, Manasseh Te’o 6-0 212 Jr. LB, Coleson Quiring 6-1 185 Sr. DB

Outlook: It’s rarely easy for a team to replace a departed senior class. When it was a large class like Westlake had in 2021 (31 athletes), it becomes a monumental undertaking.

The hope for the Thunder is that the next group of guys is ready to stand tall and shine under pressure but most are going to have to prove it on the field since Westlake has just seven total returning starters (five on offense, two on defense).

It certainly doesn’t help that Westlake plays in a brutally difficult region where victories are always tough to come by. The challenges of the regular season have paid off in one sense for the Thunder, who have won 6A playoff first-round games in three consecutive seasons (defeating Davis in 2019, Hunter in 2020 and Roy in 2021).

Despite having to rebuild, Westlake would certainly love to build on those successes and get a couple of victories in the playoffs this fall.
