Dual meet tournaments were the prominent form of competition this past weekend in wrestling.

Host Westlake took down the title at the first annual Utah Girls Dual Tournament on Saturday. This meet featured the top rated teams in the 6A, 5A, and 1A-3A classifications.

Eight schools took part and after pool competition for the first three rounds, Westlake, Maple Mountain, Juab and Uintah moved on to the championship “gold” bracket.

Westlake defeated Juab 48-24 in the semifinals before beating Maple Mountain 60-18 in the championship match. Maple Mountain reached the championship match by downing Uintah 42-33. Uintah then defeated Juab 42-39 for third place. The Thunder also defeated Fremont 54-24, Riverton 57-18 and Uintah 54-30 in their pool.

There was an intriguing dual meet that did take place in pool competition as Maple Mountain defeated Juab 42-39.

Maple Mountain’s head coach is Hailey Corona and her father Billy Cox leads the Juab program. Last year, Cox actually led Maple Mountain to the inaugural 1-A-3A/5A state championship but moved to Nephi to take the helm of the Wasp program. But Corona’s Golden Eagles were able to hold off the Wasps in a very exciting dual meet.

Westlake’s title run was led by Jamie Barton (105 pounds), Celeste Detoles (125), Hailey Piig (140), Emmy Finlinson (145), Lizzie Shunn (145/155) and Keilikki Rarick (235), who all went undefeated.

Donna Wright (120) and Nya Seiluli (190) had unblemished records for Maple Mountain.

In other weekend girls wrestling action, Mountain View hosted a round robin individual bracketed tournament in conjunction with the boys 5A Duals.

No team scores were kept but local wrestlers that won individual included Springville’s Emeri Mortimer (105), American Leadership Academy’s (ALA) Rachel Camacho (110), Springville’s Laura Weakley (120), Cedar Valley’s Alexia Woods (120B), Springville’s Izzy Clements (125), Timpview’s Kaianne Sabagala (130B), Salem Hills’s Braylin Jones (135), Mountain View’s Zarieh Power (135B), Springville’s Karalie Harris (140), Mountain View’s Esther Han (140B), Springville’s Hotaia Valeti (155), and Timpview’s Taimane Fiatoa (170).

In dual meet action during the week Westlake whipped Mountain Crest 54-30 meaning that the Thunder beat the favorites in 1A-3A, 4A and 5A all in the same week.

Boys Wrestling

Mountain View hosted the 5A Duals over two days and in an irregular format. It was really two tournaments in one with most teams either competing on Friday or Saturday, though Spanish Fork did compete both days. 5A favorite Uintah did not participate.

Payson went 5-0 on Friday defeating in dominating fashion Lehi 69-9, Northridge 79-0, Alta 67-6, Spanish Fork 70-6 and Salem Hills 49-15.

Payson also entered another team and its B team went 4-1 defeating Alta 42-34, Skyline 63-10, Orem 53-24, Provo 53-21, but losing a close one to Highland 42-32.

Salem Hills also went 4-1 as the Skyhawks downed Northridge 45-36, Lehi 44-36, Highland 52-27, and Alta 51-27 before losing to the Lion varsity squad.

On Saturday, Wasatch flexed its muscles going 5-0 defeating Woods Cross 52-30, Cedar Valley 72-12, Mountain View 59-21, Springville 54-15 and Viewmont 42-24.

These were the undefeated wrestlers (minimum four matches) in the 5A Duals: Cedar Valley: Braden Balmforth; Lehi: Will McCleary (190), Isaac Terrell (225); Mountain View: Gable Stoddard (113/120), Tyler Blevins (144); Orem: Hudson Doussett (190); Payson: Aaron Garcia (113), Ethan Boulton (126), Will Dixon (132/138), Colton Theobald (138/144), Trevor Frank (150), Kelton Smith (157), Quayde Beck (165), Landen Shurtleff (175); Payson B: Layne Osborn (150), Carter Vasquez (285); Salem Hills: Monson Morley (215); Spanish Fork: Karson Shelley (106), Bridger Warren (138); Springville: Tevita Valeti (175); Wasatch: Parker Hayes (120), Heath Clyde (126), Ryder Robinson (132), Austin Kelly (138).

Pleasant Grove was the highest finishing local team at the 6A Duals, but the Vikings did not send many of their top wrestlers. Still, the Vikings placed second in their pool on Friday going 4-1 and then went on to go 2-2 in the championship gold pool. Layton ended up winning the tournament going 9-0 over two days.

Much like Pleasant Grove, Westlake battled without some of its top grapplers throughout the tourney and the Thunder were relegated to the silver pool after going 3-2 on Friday. But Westlake went 4-0 on day two to win its pool. Skyridge also competed in the silver pool and went 3-1.

After a rough first day where American Fork went 1-4, the Cavemen bounced back on Saturday going 4-0 to win the bronze pool. Lone Peak went 1-3 in the bronze pool after going winless on Friday.

These were the undefeated wrestlers (minimum eight matches) at the 6A Duals: American Fork: Tege Kelley (120), Dallan Hunsaker (132); Lone Peak: Corbin Baumgartner (165), Cayaen Smith (175), Mahkyi Smith (190); Skyridge: Errol Yellowhair (106) Josh Millward (150).

Tinpanogos did venture down to southern Utah to battle in an individual bracketed tournament at Enterprise where Conner Knudsen (106) finished second. The Timberwolves finished 11th in the 21-team tourney field which was won by 4A Snow Canyon.

In dual meet action last week Uintah whipped Wasatch 60-18, but the Wasps stopped Spanish Fork 60-21 and pinned Payson 47-25. Payson did top Tooele 63-15 while ALA advanced past Maple Mountain 42-39. Skyridge slammed North Summit 56-19, Lone Peak haunted Herriman 43-30, while Orem slipped past West Jordan, 39-34.
