Leading for most of the game doesn’t mean a whole lot to a high school boys basketball team when it sees its advantage evaporate quickly early in the fourth quarter — especially on the road against a good opponent.

That was the situation Springville found itself in Tuesday night at Salem Hills. The Skyhawks had used a 3-pointer, a breakaway layup and a tough finish with a foul to erase the six-point lead the Red Devils has to start the frame and take a 44-42 lead.

But Springville senior Chase Haslem fed off the intensity of the moment and came up big for his team.

Haslem scored nine straight points while the Red Devil defense went into lockdown mode, allowing Springville to go back in front and eventually secure the 64-55 win.

“I was just thinking about not losing our heads,” Haslem said. “I know my team needed me. They needed me to get a couple of buckets so that’s just what I wanted to do. We stopped their run and then got some buckets to get us some momentum.”

Springville head coach Justin Snell said Haslem showed the moxie of the veteran he is when the outcome was in doubt.

“There were still five-and-a-half minutes left in the game,” Snell said. “We called a timeout and said, ‘look, you’ve got plenty of time. Make sure the ball touches the paint every possession.’ And then I just let my senior Chase have the ball. We ran the ball screen basically every possession down the floor almost exclusively with Chase. Chase is a senior who deserves the opportunity to win a game and he did a great job offensively, getting us where we needed to be.”

Salem Hills tried to find answers but the Red Devil defensive effort limited the Skyhawks to a single foul shot during the 12-1 Springville run.

“The boys did a good job,” Snell said. “Other than a couple of games, they’ve always done a good job trusting the scouting report and then adjusting to the tweaks that the other coach makes. The guys jumped plays at the right time and just threw off the rhythm. From there, it’s just whether we’re going to pick up the ball or not, and we think the we got after it enough to go get some.”

Haslem also was quick to credit the contributions of some of the bench players, who stepped up big as the Red Devils dealt with some foul trouble.

“I was super happy, especially with the guys like Luke (Nadauld) and Carter (Ozuna) coming off the bench,” Haslem said. “I’ve been waiting for them to step up in their roles and not be afraid to shoot, and that’s exactly what they did. They helped us get a big win.”

Haslem paced Springville with 24 points, while freshman Mason Hansen tacked on 13 points and Luke Nadauld had 10.

Salem Hills got 18 points from junior Chase DeGraffenreid, while senior Jackson Nelson put in 16.

Haslem and Snell know that the regular season is nearing its end and this is when good teams take their game to another level.

“I just think we need to keep preparing,” Haslem said. “Everyone needs to keep their heads and not get too high or too low. It’s easy after a big win like this to go lay an egg against a bad team. I think we just need to keep our heads and role guys need to keep stepping up. If we come together at the right time, I think we can make a good run.”

Snell said that he also believes his team could have big things ahead.

“We just told them in the locker room that we’ve got a week and a half to make sure we hit our peak,” Snell said. “From a defensive standpoint, I think we can play with anybody. I think we’re a hard guard. Our offense still needs to come. But I’m really happy with where we’re at, knowing that our best ball is still in front of us.”
