An error-laden contest for both teams went to the one making fewer mistakes as Highland outlasted Orem 34-25 in the state 4A football quarterfinals Friday evening in Orem.
Ram defensive back Malcolm Card-Turner came up with three interceptions, including two in the red zone, to stymie the Tiger offense.
Orem also made some big plays. For example, cornerback Jacob Miller got his own pick right after his team had to punt away, but the Tigers weren’t able to capitalize on that one.
In the fourth quarter, cornerback Jacob Wadsworth got an interception as well, and this time it led directly to a score that gave his team hope of a comeback.
However, the point-after attempt was blocked, leaving the Tigers still needing two scores to keep pace.
Later on, when they were still down nine with time running out, Orem blocked a punt and got the ball back in great position, but that series abruptly ended with the last of Card-Turner’s interceptions.
The Tigers also struggled to contain the very potent Highland rushing attack. All five Ram touchdowns came on the ground.
Orem receivers Nolan Gray and Tyler Valdez both showed why they’ve had such terrific years along with quarterback Taylor Camp.
The Tigers finish the season at 8-4. Highland will take on Mountain Crest in next week’s semifinals.
