The pressure-packed state playoffs is when the top girls soccer teams usually have solid goalkeepers playing at a high level.
That’s just what Orem has in Chelsea Peterson, who stymied both Juan Diego and Sky View in back-to-back overtime thrillers last week in the 4A first round and quarterfinals.
In keeping a lid on the goal, Peterson did her part to allow the Tigers to keep attacking until they were finally able to get the ball in the net.
Orem will need Peterson to be huge this weekend. The Tigers face an even bigger test as they will take on Mountain Crest in the semifinals on Friday night at Jordan High School with a spot in Saturday’s 4A title game on the line.
The Timberwolves had to have a Senior Night win against visiting Springville to have any hope of reaching the 5A state playoffs this year. Although it wasn’t easy against the tough Red Devil defense, Gabe Sweeten came through.
On the very first play of overtime, Sweeten broke free around the right side of the line and raced 25 yards for the touchdown. That put Timpanogos in front for good as the Timberwolf defense held the Red Devils scoreless.
It’s been a solid year for the senior as Sweeten has gone 105-of-183 passing for 1,455 with 17 TDs and four interceptions, while also adding 85 rushes for 633 yards and eight TDs on the ground.
