Lone Peak has a one-point lead over Davis after the first day of the Class 6A Girls Tennis Championships in Salt Lake City.
The Knights scored ten points on Day 1 and have a semifinalist in each one of the five brackets heading into Saturday’s final day of competition, while Davis has nine points and four semifinalists. Pleasant Grove is third with eight points and three semifinalists.
In 1st Singles, Maci Amussen of Pleasant Grove defeated Megan Timpson of Taylorsville 6-1, 6-4 and Alyssa Bentley of Granger 6-0, 6-0 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. She’ll play Jacque Dunyon of Weber, the No. 1 seed from Region 1.
Lone Peak freshman Marinn Patch cruised through her first round match, beating Sydney Skousen of Copper Hills 6-0, 6-0 but was locked in a battle with Anna Kemp of Layton in the second round. Patch eventually prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) to advance to meet another freshman, Juliana Cooksey of Davis, in the semifinals.
Lone Peak’s Mandie Robbins, the No. 1 seed from Region 4 in 2nd Singles, topped Madie Wischerath 6-0, 6-0 and Sydney Reading of Herriman 6-1, 6-0 to reach the semifinals. Robbins will take on Clearfield’s Linsey Austad in the semifinals.
In 3rd Singles, Lone Peak senior Anna Peterson handled Melody Christman of Cyprus 6-0, 6-0 and Kaela Laws of Davis 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the semifinals against Herriman’s Emily Swapp.
Pleasant Grove’s Anslie Stevens powered through to the semifinals by beating Natalia Acevedo of Granger 6-2, 6-0 and Lexi Robbins of Riverton 6-4, 6-3. Stevens will play Layton’s Baylee Coleman in one of the semifinals.
The Lone Peak duo of Katie King and Joslin Seaberg didn’t drop a set in moving on to the 1st Doubles semifinals. They defeated Shelby Birch and Abby Hoyal of Copper Hills 6-0, 6-0 and Whitney Stratton and Alyssa Peterson of Layton 6-0, 6-0. King and Seaberg will play Region 4 foes Lilly Craft and Cami Whiting of Pleasant Grove. Craft and Whiting defeated Callie Davis and Meg Finlay of Herriman 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-0 and Maren Dawson and Aimee Chambers of Northridge 6-2, 6-3.
Lone Peak’s Zoie Black and Sydney Allen lost just one set in making the 2nd Doubles semifinals. Black and Allen took care of Chelsea Eager and Makenzie Judson of Northridge 6-0, 6-0 and Emily Harris and Ashley Davenport of Riverton 6-1, 6-0 and will play Elle Ferguson and Elle Dunyon of Davis.
The other 2nd Doubles semifinals feature two Utah County teams. Trishelle Peterson and Lizzy Hafen of American Fork topped Maycee Barrett and Tess Christopulos of Layton 6-4, 7-5 and Kaitelyn Kotter and Syrena Wilding of Taylorsville 6-3, 6-1 to earn a spot in the semifinals. Peterson and Hafen will take on Maddy Harris and Chole Brinton of Pleasasnt Grove. That duo defeated Madyson Wood and Brianna Montgomery of Weber 6-2, 6-2 and Madi Hansen and Brittney Richins of Herriman 6-0, 6-0.
The event was staged at the Salt Lake Tennis Center and the Eccles Tennis Center to avoid inclement weather.
Lone Peak has won five state titles (2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017) all under John La Cognata, who retired after last season.
