College Roundup: BYU women’s soccer faces North Carolina in Sweet 16

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — No. 6 seed BYU women’s soccer will face No. 2 seed North Carolina in the Sweet 16 at Dorrance Field on Saturday morning.

Saturday’s matchup has been scheduled for 9:30 a.m. MST. The game will be carried live on BYURadio.org, the BYU Radio app and BYU Radio 107.9 FM. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+.

Under the direction of head coach Jennifer Rockwood, BYU has previously made 22 NCAA tournament appearances, including five Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights and a College Cup finals appearance last season. BYU was the No. 12 seed last year and finished as the NCAA College Cup National Runner-Up, falling in penalty kicks in the championship game.

BYU last competed against Stanford on Thursday in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at Dorrance Field. After playing through two overtime periods with a 1-1 draw, the Cougars advanced to the Sweet 16 on PKs, 5-4. Olivia Wade opened the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute. The Cardinal answered back with a goal of their own in the 22nd minute. The rest of the game and the 20 minutes of overtime passed without goals by either team, forcing penalty kicks. Freshman goalkeeper Taygan Sill came onto the pitch just for the shootout, and came up with a huge stop. With a final goal by BYU midfielder Ellie Maughan, the Cougars advanced.

BYU women’s hoops beats Washington State

LAIE, HAWAII — Nani Falatea scored a career-high 19 points, Lauren Gustin totaled 15 points and 15 rebounds and Rose Bubakar contributed a career-high 15 points as BYU topped Washington State 67-57 at the North Shore Showcase.

It was win No. 1 for first-year Cougar head coach Amber Whiting.

BYU (1-3) outscored the Red Cougars 18-11 in the first quarter and held the lead the rest of the game. Arielle Mackey-Williams converted a 3-point play and Falatea scored on a layup to beat the third-quarter buzzer to give the blue Cougars a 53-37 lead entering the fourth period.

BYU continues play at the North Shore Showcase on Saturday at 6 p.m. MT against Troy.

UVU men’s hoops falls to Morgan State in overtime

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA — Le’Tre Darthard made a layup with 16 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime but Utah Valley couldn’t convert two chances to take the lead late in a 73-72 loss to Morgan State on Friday at the Jamaica Classic.

Aziz Bandaogo led UVU (2-3) with 15 points, Darthard added 12 and Justin Harmon had 11. Malik Miller led Morgan State (2-3) with 20 points.

The Wolverines will play Green Bay on Sunday.
