This year, the Big Outdoors Expo is poised to be larger than ever, and after spending some time with founder and organizer Tony Abbott, this show is meant to get folks to enjoy the great outdoor.
Founder Tony Abbott said the expo, which was held at Utah Valley University’s UCCU Center on Friday and Saturday, looked to highlight the diversity of opportunities available in Utah and get people interested in them.
“There’s something for everyone and that was the whole key to this,” Abbott said. “If someone walks into this show and doesn’t find something they like, I tell them I’ll give them their money back.”
The expo started three years ago as a way to get people interacting with all of the opportunities to get outdoors and be active that Utah offers, he said.
“I am tired of hearing about kids and their video games and couch time,” Abbott said. “If I can give them something that will get them outside and active — I don’t care if it’s hunting, biking, fishing, rock climbing, trail running, and you can add as many of those as you want on there — I want them to get outside.”
There is plenty to do for the kids while mom and dad browse through the show. This year Scales and Tails will perform four times throughout the show along with displaying all of their critters throughout the day. As always, there will be the traditional free ice cream from Arctic Circle, face painting by Kat and Lance Nielson Magic of Salt Lake.
Parents, don’t worry, there will be plenty to do and see: perhaps a moment with Ty Detmer, BYU’s Heisman Trophy winner, to discuss his T-14 Ranch might be interesting. Or even just checking out all of the latest hunting and fishing gear available to get the family out and making memories.
This year, Tony has chosen to give away 10 Limited Entry Mule Deer Vouchers for hunting deer in Vernon out in the West Dessert of Utah. These vouchers are fully transferable and can be applied for before, during and after the show at https://www.thebigoutdoors.com/hda/index.html. Winners will be drawn on June 15 and notified by Abbott.
Get out of being hooked on all the electronics and check out the Big Outdoors Expo set for March 22 and 23 at UVU in the UCCU Center, where there is always plenty of close free parking. Tickets for this year’s show are $10 for adults 17 and under are free.
