Cavemen win both league cross country titles

The American Fork cross country team captured both divisions of the Region 4 meet at American Fork Friday afternoon.

It was only the second time that the girls team has won a region title, while it was the sixth time in a row, seventh overall, for the boys squad.

In the girls event, Bingham’s Emily Rich won individual medalist honors, followed by Lone Peak’s Jessica Smith and Lehi’s Jackie Heaps.

Sophie Baird was the top-finishing Caveman in fourth place, but she was immediately followed by teammates Makayla Stepp, Diane Leach and Maddie Bench. The four finished within a five-second span.

Katie Cornell came in at 11th, so American Fork finished with a 33. Emily Orton, Lexie Green and Amber Bardin all placed in the next five spots.

The Pioneers finished second with 56. The other scoring runners were Kenzie Draper, Maddie Kauffman, Nicole Sharman and Emily Allen.

Bingham was third, Riverton fourth, Lone Peak fifth and Pleasant Grove sixth. The top competitor for the Vikings was Taryn Whetten, who came in 15th.

In the boys race, the Cavemen took six of the top seven places to finish with a 17. The Miners were second with 57, followed by the Silverwolves, the Knights, Lehi and Pleasant Grove.

Connor McMillan was the individual medalist at 15:59. Brayden McLelland was second, just four seconds behind, with Tyson Green third, Zac Jacklin fifth and Caleb Thompson sixth. Spencer Herzog was seventh. Tyler Bell and Jacob Chase also ran for American Fork.

Finishing first for Lone Peak was Jon Cahoon in 10th place. Viking Tanner Nelson was 24th and Pioneer Chance Hohneke came in 27th as the first runners in for their respective teams.

The all-class state cross country meet is Oct. 17 at Sugarhouse Park and Highland High School.
