Late touchdown sends Vikings past Cavemen
A 15-yard run by Tyler Schade with under five minutes left helped the Pleasant Grove Vikings grab a 28-21 Region 4 victory over long-time rival American Fork on Wednesday at American Fork.
With the Cavemen up 21-20 with 4:45 remaining, Schade went into the end zone, giving P.G. the 26-21 lead. Quarterback Michael Anderson then connected with Dallin Hatch for the two-point conversion, giving them the final 28-21 score.
The Viking defense followed that by not allowing the Cavemen to get a first down on the nest series. The ball was turned over on downs on the American Fork 20-yard line, and the Vikings couldn’t get anything going on their first three downs of the final drive, making it appear the Cavemen would have one final shot at the victory.
But a 16-yard pass from Anderson to Schade that landed the Vikings on the one-yard line, was just enough to give Pleasant Grove the important win, leaving them with a now 3-1 record in Region 4 action and a share of first place. The loss dropped the Cavemen to 1-3 this season.
The Vikings were the first to strike early in the first period as Anderson and Schade connected on the 21-yard touchdown pass.
The Cavemen quickly came back as Zachary Katoa showed off his running skills for a 21-yard touchdown, evening things up at 7-7 before the first quarter ended.
American Fork’s Anthony Decker picked up an interception early in the second period, but the Cavemen couldn’t capitalize, having to punt the ball to Pleasant Grove. Two plays later, Colton Babb ran it in for the three-yard touchdown and a 14-7 Pleasant Grove advantage.
But the Cavemen came back on their next drive as Jonah Trinnamon broke free and ran 34 yards untouched to score. It appeared the score may be tied at halftime, but Pleasant Grove got one last shot and took advantage of it, getting a four-yard run from Skyler Munson for a score. However, the point-after failed and P.G. led just 20-14 at the break.
In the third quarter, American Fork pinned the Vikings deep in their own territory — on their on 6-yard line — on a nice 32-yard punt. Three plays later, with Pleasant Grove on the 7, the Vikings tried a trick play with Munson at quarterback. But the snap misfired, and American Fork’s Colby Smith recovered the ball in the end zone to make the score 20-20. Tanner Lee gave the Cavemen the 21-20 lead with the extra point.
Pleasant Grove had a chance to score late in the third, but a fumbled snap on the A.F. 8-yard line left the Vikings attempint a field goa, which was blocked by Brad Hill, and American Fork maintained the slim lead
American Fork’s Brandon Eldridge picked off a Pleasant Grove pass on the 40-yard line in the middle of the fourth, but the Cavemen then missed their own 48-yard field goal with just over seven minutes to go, giving the ball to the Vikings and eventually leading to the winning touchdown.
