American Fork philharmonic to perform for PBS broadcast
An American Fork philharmonic comprised entirely of teenagers will be performing Wednesday evening with recently-signed Sony Masterworks Artists The Piano Guys at Red Butte Garden as part of a nationally-televised PBS broadcast.
The Lyceum Philharmonic, which was named Best Youth Instrumental Group for the last four years by Best of State Utah and recognized across the nation as one of the country’s premier youth performing ensembles, will perform Beethoven’s 5 Secrets under the direction of Kayson Brown.
Orchestrated by Mr. Brown and Piano Guys Cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, Beethoven’s 5 Secrets was created by combining OneRepublic’s Billboard Top 40 hit “Secrets” with melodies from all four movements of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
Mr. Brown is the founder of the Lyceum Music Festival and director of the American Heritage Lyceum Orchestras Program, where he oversees four youth orchestras and a nationally significant summer music festival. He co-wrote the Beethoven’s 5 Secrets single that ranked No. 1 on the iTunes Classical Charts.
In early 2012, the American Fork Citizen highlighted the rise of the Lyceum Philharmonic when the orchestra first collaborated with Mr. Nelson to produce 5 Secrets. In its first three months, the video received more than 3 million views on YouTube and remained No. 1 on the iTunes charts through April. Now, the orchestral and vocal releases have nearly 10 million views.
“Mixing Beethoven and OneRepublic has both educated and motivated a rising generation of classically-trained musicians,” said Mr. Brown. “Performing on a PBS Great Performances special is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the students of the American Heritage Lyceum Philharmonic.”
The PBS broadcast, produced by KUED-TV in collaboration with KBYU, will be televised locally in December and nationally in 2013, and will also feature Alex Boye, a children’s choir and a “semi-professional accordionist from the Dark Side.”
