Football: Costly turnovers help lift Knights over Cavemen

By Beky Beaton - | Sep 22, 2012

The Lone Peak football team scored after turnovers four times to help top American Fork 38-21 on the road to open the Region 4 season Friday night. It was the Knights that coughed up the ball first however, and the Cavemen quickly capitalized to get the early advantage.

Lone Peak elected to receive the ball but Knight quarterback Baron Gajkowski was intercepted by American Fork safety Anthony Decker on the first series and the Cavemen got the ball at the Lone Peak 25.

Junior quarterback Jeremiah Evans immediately found junior wide receiver Hayden Johnson for the touchdown, and Tanner Lee added the PAT to make it 7-0.

Following a couple of fruitless exchanges, the Knights got the ball on their own 42 and marched right down to even the score at 7-all.

On the second play of the next possession, American Fork fumbled and Lone Peak tackle Taylor Nelson claimed the ball at the American Fork 23. Eventually the Knights extended their lead with a Lee field goal.

Lone Peak later scored twice in the last 1:30 of the half, both times after recovering fumbles deep in Caveman territory. The Knights added another fumble-aided score plus a final one on a conventional drive to complete their tally for the night.

The Cavemen found the end zone twice in the final period to narrow the gap but they simply were facing too deep of a deficit to recover.

“We were looking to make some progress from last week, and we did,” said Lone Peak coach Tony McGeary.

“We cleaned up some of our offensive errors,” the coach explained. “The defense came up with some turnovers and we took advantage. We came with a different attitude this week, and it showed.”

Gajkowski completed 9-of-17 passes for 147 yards and two interceptions, but also rushed 17 times for 87 yards and four touchdowns. Watkins finished with 70 yards receiving and 24 rushing with one touchdown.

Next week, the Knights (4-2, 1-0) will host Bingham (5-1, 1-0) Thursday at 7 p.m., while the Cavemen (2-4, 0-1) will visit Lehi (2-4, 0-1) Friday at 7 p.m.
