Fortunate were the occupants of a new car, which was completely demolished in a spectacular one-car accident Saturday at about 9:30 a.m., one mile west of the Alpine Country Club on highway U-80, coming out of American Fork Canyon, to escape with only minor injuries. The automobile driven by Wilford E. Wilson, 71, of Salt Lake City, left the highway and rolled over on a 20-foot embankment, landing on its wheels at the bottom of the hill. Mr. Wilson and Mrs. Bernice Madsen, Salt Lake, a passenger, were taken to the American Fork Hospital, where they were treated for cuts and bruises and released. Two other passengers, Mrs. Wilson and Stanley M. Sprouse both escaped without injury. The new car had only 54 miles registered at the time of the accident.

Vivacious Miss Louise Beck, American Fork’s Steel Day Queen, was chosen attendant to Miss Utah 1953, after grueling tests in Salt Lake City, last week. Miss LaVon Brown, who was chosen as Miss Utah is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Brown, Provo, former residents of American Fork. Miss Beck and her mother, Mrs. Raynor Larsen, were guests at the Hotel Utah during the time they spent in Salt Lake for the contest.

Quick action on the part of the American Fork volunteer fire department, after a reported lull in the telephone connections, saved American Fork Cold Storage and Preston Food Market from total loss Sunday morning. Estimated by Sterling Fox proprietor of the locker plant placed damage to his part of the business at $10,000. Merrill Preston, owner of the market, said total damage to the locker concern and the grocery store might go as high as $20,000.

Hale and hearty despite his advanced years, William Henry Grant, one of the oldest residents of Utah County, observed his 93rd birthday anniversary, Thursday. He was born in Salt Lake City, Sept. 24, 1849, two years after the pioneers entered Utah Valley.

Among the students from American Fork leaving to register at the University of Utah this year are Miss Mildred Richards, Miss Betty Houston, second year students, and Miss Sidney Nicholes, first year student.

A committee from Utah County advised Governor George H. Dern Tuesday that there are 2144 families in Utah County who will be in need of assistance during the coming winter. It is estimated that $112,360 will be needed for relief by the first of January.

At a Relief Society conference held Sunday, Fern A. Walker was sustained as counselor to Maud D. Christensen, president. Mrs. Walker will take the place of Laura Dunkley who recently resigned.
