American Fork girls fall to undefeated Bingham
The American Fork girls basketball team led for much of the first half but ultimately fell to undefeated Bingham 51-43 to close the Region 4 season Tuesday night at home.
The Miners jumped out early, but the Cavemen tied the game halfway through the first quarter and then launched a 6-0 run.
Senior forward Amy Bergeson had a monster night on the glass, and one of her rebounds on the defensive end got the spurt jump-started as senior wing Bryanna Adams converted.
On the next possession, Adams stole the ball and fed it forward to senior guard Jaylee Shepherd for a fast-break layup.
Then it was senior guard Cassidy Fraughton grabbing a defensive board to take possession back once again. Bergeson’s offensive rebound went out to senior guard Megan Eliason for a long deuce and the nice lead.
Bingham responded however, and the Miners worked back to tie the score with a couple of minutes left in the half.
A Fraughton board and putback gave the home squad a 22-21 mark at the break, but Bingham held the lead for most of the final two periods and American Fork just couldn’t make enough plays to overtake the visitors.
“I think we knew coming in that we could play with them,” said Caveman coach Corey Clayton. “It’s frustrating when we get the shots we want and then don’t make them, especially when we normally do.
“The thing is, when you get a chance to help your team win a game, you’ve got to put them in,” the coach continued. “I have to give Bingham credit though. They were knocking theirs down.”
Especially Jillian Powell, who led all scorers with 22 points. Teammate Ashton Henderson added 10 for the Miners.
Fraughton led the home-team effort with 12 points. Eliason and sophomore center Maile Richardson added eight apiece for American Fork.
The Cavemen end the regular season at 17-5, 7-3. They finish tied for second in the league standings with Riverton (18-3, 7-3) and a coin toss will determine the seeding into the playoffs.
Next up is the 5A state tournament, which starts Monday at Salt Lake Community College.
