Despite motion, former Am. Fork treasurer ordered to report to jail by 5 p.m. on March 4
A motion to reduce the jail sentence for former American Fork treasurer Heidi Mitchell has been denied.
Mitchell was sentenced to spend 45 days in jail in late January, but her defense attorney filed a motion to reduce that sentence. He argued that if Mitchell were to spend 45 days in jail she would lose her job and therefore the income with which she is paying restitution. He also asked that she serve nine days in jail and the rest of her sentence on GPS monitoring.
Prosecution argued that serving only nine days in jail would be a slap in the face for American Fork and the taxpayers Mitchell stole from.
Fourth District Judge Fred Howard denied the motion and ordered Mitchell to report to jail by 5 p.m. on March 4.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to second-degree felony theft in December and is in the process of paying $79,214.56 in restitution for money she took from American Fork City while she was employed as treasurer.
