The top 10 apps to download if you live in American Fork

By Danny Crivello - | Jan 2, 2013

As mobile devices constantly evolve, so do the applications that are created for them. Our smartphones and tablets now can perform nearly any imaginable task — they are our channels for entertainment, communication, financial management and guides for what to eat, where to go and how to get there — and of course, they are our mouthpieces to project our thoughts, ideas and opinions no matter where we are in the world. Here are some useful apps to have if you live in the 84003 zip.

10. If finding a new job is among your New Year’s resolutions, how about considering American Fork’s largest employer, Intermountain Healthcare? The Intermountain Healthcare Careers app allows you to instantly search and share highly targeted jobs from its hospital system, from anywhere. Designed to meet and exceed your needs as you search for your next great job on the go, this app will ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest job opportunities in your area of interest.

9. Breaking news around you: Have you tried the Daily Herald app? News, events, weather and sports from the number one local website in the county — including all American Fork Citizen articles under the blog section. See the latest news and photos, download and save articles to read later, discuss and comment on news and search our archive. The iPad app looks less like a newspaper than a glossy magazine.

8. Flood coming to AF? If the current trend in snow fall continues, we might soon have a different problem on our hands. By leveraging data from the US Geological Survey and National Weather Service, FloodWatch presents the most recent and historical river heights, precipitation totals, and flood stage data. Graphs are available to help you visualize the rise and fall of the river.

7. Yes, smartphones can make your thumbs green. Enjoyed by thousands of gardeners and landscape professionals world-wide, Landscaper’s Companion is the #1 reference guide to all plants including trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials. Containing information on over 26,000 plants and 21,000 pictures, Landscaper’s Companion makes an excellent resource for the casual gardener, professional landscaper, aspiring botanist, or anyone looking for a simple, easy to use plant guide.

6. Tap and ye shall find: The Deseret Bookshelf app puts your entire library in the palm of your hand. Deseret Bookshelf is a free e-reader created specifically for LDS books and scripture study. This LDS app is a companion for your gospel study, church calling, or any time you need a little literary inspiration on-the-go. Any Mormon in American Fork?

5. If you live here, chances are you don’t know what your body looks like with a tattoo. Now you can trade in the tattoo machine for your iPhone and turn normal photos of yourself into tattoo riddled masterpieces today. Download Tattoo You and add some spice into any of your mobile photos by adding in virtual tattoos with the click of a button right now. The best part? The app was designed by Appdicted, an American Fork-based app maker.

4. American Fork big boxes in your phone: Walmart, Target, Costco all have apps. Get quick access to products, description, price and even shop on the go. Help American Fork traffic congestion — and store congestion — by knowing what’s available before you leave the home.

3. Commuting from American Fork? The UDOT Traffic app allows you to access road conditions and traffic information on your device, including a zoomable, scrollable map, current traffic conditions on Utah’s freeways and major surface streets accident, road construction and other hazard and even traffic camera images and electronic roadway sign messages.

2. Excellent grade: Skyward Mobile Access provides intuitive access for students, parents, and school staff in the Alpine School District. Skyward Mobile Access will take you instantly to your vital information such as grades, attendance, discipline, payroll, time off, and more.

1. No more late fees: BookMyne for the American Fork Library makes it quick and easy to access our local library on the go. Search the library’s catalog, download items, renew books, manage your account and find suggested reading instantly with your device. Best part? Search by barcode: Use your device’s camera to scan the barcode on a book, CD, DVD, or other item at a friend’s house or bookstore and search for available copies at the American Fork library. This app saves you money.
