American Fork clicks in Region 4 opening win over Lehi
There have been times during the preseason when American Fork allowed its fans to take a peak behind the curtain to see what kind of team the Cavemen were rehearsing for.
A few minutes of inspired basketball were interrupted by inconsistency.
It was just enough to allow people to think this team could be special but never enough to convince them.
Until Friday night’s 73-49 win over Lehi in the Region 4 opener.
American Fork finally put it all together and it was pretty impressive.
“This was the first game where I feel like I think we played on more than two cylinders,” said American Fork coach Doug Meacham. “We had some guys who took the challenge defensively and we had just three turnovers in the first half. We’re getting better and that’s what you hope for.”
The Cavemen were so good they took the fun out of taunting their rivals. When American Fork students chanted “It’s all over” at halftime, Lehi had no response.
What was there to say?
Ryan Andrus posted up inside and spotted up outside. Tyler Rawson worked his way around the key and Brendan Bailey enjoyed himself from the 3-point line.
American Fork opened up a 17-7 lead after one quarter and stretched it to 37-19 at the half thanks in large part to its 6-of-8 shooting behind the 3-point line.
Brayden Harris and Andrus hit back to back shots and after
Taylor Larson scored on a layup Rawson got a step on his defender and threw down a one-handed dunk to set the tone in the first half.
Andrus finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Rawson scored 13 points and Bailey finished with 10.
Frank Jackson led Lehi with 11 points.
