Man pleads guilty to killing American Fork boy in car crash

By American Fork Citizen - | Jul 23, 2013

A West Jordan man pleaded guilty on Friday to charges stemming from a head-on collision that killed an American Fork toddler and injured his family.

Thomas Ainsworth turned to the family and apologized after entering the plea Friday in 3rd District Court to three counts of negligent driving that caused injury or death on Christmas Eve 2011.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the 56-year-old Ainsworth faces up to 15 years in prison on each count when he’s sentenced in late September.

According to prosecutors, he was on methamphetamine and THC and reaching for a cellphone when he crossed a median and struck another vehicle head-on in Salt Lake County.

American Fork residents Ryan Pack, his wife Kelly Pack and their 3-year-old son Finn were injured in the crash. Their 18-month-old son Colum was killed.

Ryan Pack says the family is still struggling with the death every day.
