A tragedy was narrowly averted Sunday night by several quick thinking individuals and thanks to their efforts a little boy is happily playing around his home. Someone had left the lid off the cement flume which passes under the sidewalk on the west end of the S. L. Chipman property. Ralph, 5, and Glen, 2, small sons of Mr. and Mrs. Weston Pratt, were playing about when the little fellow, Glen, tumbled head first into the flume and was carried under the cement sidewalk by the water. The Reverand James O. Arthur, of Payson, who had just come from the Orem station, saw the splash and hurrying to the scene found the elder brother crying that his brother was “down there.” He reached into the water as far as he could and was unable to touch the child and made frantic efforts to turn the water out of the flume. He called for help and Kenneth Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Robinson, heard him and rushed over. Young Robinson, with no thought of his Sunday apparel, crawled down into the opening and on into the flume, grasping the little one by the legs and backed out. The opening is very small and Robinson scraped his back considerably in the process. In the meantime, the water had been diverted. Weston Pratt, the child’s father, applied first aid restorative measures and when physicians, who had been summoned, arrived, the little chap was about revived and none the worse for the mishap.
