‘Honored with lovely flowers’: Touching Citizen articles on Memorial Day 50, 60, 70 and 80 years ago

The American Fork city cemetery is being readied for the Memorial Day holiday and will be in excellent condition for the occasion, according to Councilman F. Haws Durfey, chairman of the cemetery department. Maintenance work is now underway under the direction of city cemetery sexton John Varney. New cemetery rest rooms are nearing completion and will be opened to the public this week.

Sexton Deloss Dickerson and his assistants have been busy for the past several weeks bringing the cemetery up to the usual beautiful condition of past years. Memorial Day will be observed in American Fork Monday, May 31, because of the regularly set day falling on Sunday. It is expected however, that many people who may have to work Monday will come to American Fork on Sunday to decorate their cemetery lots.

Paying tribute to those who lie in the cemetery, Sylvan W. Clark, veteran of World War I and Utah County commissioner, speaking at the Memorial Day services at the Soldiers’ Monument, mentioned the sacrifices made by the pioneers as well as those who gave their lives for their country and emphasized their ideals and objectives.

The memories of loves ones interred in the city cemetery, were honored with lovely flowers Wednesday by many hundreds of persons who visited the graves in keeping with the national custom of Memorial Day. A large number of people residing outside of American Fork came for the day and paid reverent tribute to their dead, along with the people of this city. Post 49 of the American Legion with Commander J. J. Mercer, Jr., in charge conducted the program. Many took advantage of the clear cool weather and the holiday after visiting the graves to enjoy trips to nearby canyons and resorts.
