Horror as 2 Am. Fork residents plunge to their deaths when ATV rolls off 100-foot cliff; kids involved

By Staff | May 27, 2014

Two American Fork residents and their grandchildren rolled off a cliff Sunday about 100 feet to the canyon floor.

The Emery County Sheriff’s Office has identified two people killed in an all-terrain vehicle accident in the San Rafael Desert over the weekend.

The sheriff’s office says in a statement Tuesday that 70-year-old Hubert Roger Issel and his wife, 64-year-old Alana Lea Issel, who lived in American Fork, were killed in the Sunday accident in Eagle Canyon, east of the town of Moore. The group was riding in a Can-Am side-by-side ATV driven by Hubert Issel near the west end of Eagle Canyon.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned that ATVs are dangerous, being the fifth deadliest product, as every year 700 people die and 136,000 go to the emergency room because of ATV-related injuries.

In a sad twist, Issel’s grandchildren, ages 7 and 8, were on the side-by-side ATV when it rolled off the cliff about 80 to 100 feet to the canyon floor. It is unclear if both children, who were flown by medical helicopters to hospitals, survived the drop, as more details about the accident were not released Tuesday.

“The family has requested that details regarding this tragic incident not be given out, and we are doing our best to respect their privacy at this difficult time,” the Emery County Sheriff’s Office press release read.
