Sixty Years

On November 19, 1948, Claude J. (Joe) Salisbury and Mary Whiteley were married in the Salt Lake Temple. Officiating was Apostle Harold B. Lee, a few months before he became President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joe had grown up in Springville, Utah, attended BYU, served in World War II, first in the 115th Engineers with the Utah National Guard from Springville, then as a Troop Carrier Pilot in the Army Air Corps, 5th Air Force in the Southwest Pacific Area – then as a Missionary in the Northern States Mission based in Chicago.

Mary, from Oakley, Idaho, had graduated from BYU, worked as a secretary at USO Hq. in the Empire State Building; secretary in the Admissions Office at Columbia University, New York; and as secretary to President Olpin at University of Utah – actually previously as secretary to President Franklin S. Harris at BYU.

They lived in Twin Falls, Idaho for 48 years – 38 at the home at 598 Cindy Drive. Their five children: Osburn (Jacque Nelson); James (deceased) (Jiahui Xiong), Grant (Gwen LeVasseur); Mary Ann (Kiyoshi Watanabe); and Julie (Randy Atkin); 22 grandchildren, 5 greatgrandchildren. They camped, hiked, skied, and scouted South and Central Idaho.

Together and sometimes with their children, they traveled extensively over all six continents, with arrangements from their office, Magic Carpet Travels, Twin Falls; and in the past eleven years from their home in Provo, where they now reside.

They loved working as officers and teachers in the Church and in the Boy Scout Council.
