By Judy Elsner - | Apr 8, 2009

The Springville, Mapleton Daughters of Utah Pioneers celebrated the 108th birthday of the organization at thier April 2 company meeting held at the Art Museum. Maureen Clark led them singing “Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.”

Sandy Allison, DUP Museum director, gave an update on the plans for the open house at the museum during Art City Days in June. Digital imaging is in progress at the museum so assist the public in their family research online.

Kay Roberts presented the names of the officers for the 2009-2010 year. The newly elected officers will be installed on May 16 at the district convention in Provo.

The birthday celebration continued with a program of histories of early Utah pioneers. Marian Jacobson told of her ancestor, Ann Green Dutson Carling, who was born in 1802 and came to America in 1842.

She was set apart and blessed by Joseph Smith to be a midwife and served her community this way. The fee for her services was three dollars. She died at 91 and was buried in the Fillmore Cemetery.

Hilda Houtz gave a history of Sarah Jane Roylance Houtz and her husband’s grandfather, Alexander Robertson. She also told of George Harrison or “Beefsteak Harrison,” a colorful character in Springville’s history.

Catherine Boman talked about Clara Boyer and Glen Law. Clara moved to Springville in her late teens and had a great love for the area.

She married Oscar Boyer of Springville. When he was called on a mission and Clara left the area for awhile, she was grateful to be back in her beautiful Springville. Clara was always expressing gratitude, love and her feelings through poetry.

Clara’s son-in-law, Clen Law, was a musician and had a great love for Springville too. It seemed only right for Clara and Glen to work together on the piece of music they both loved, the song “Springville.” It was copyrighted in 1942.

Recently the Musettes performed at Jamestown Assisted Living Center in Provo. “Springville” was sung, and the many residents who had lived in Springville loved the performance.

Boman said “Clara would be delighted to know there are those who still enjoy her gift to Springville.”

The DUP daughters then sang “Springville.”

The next meeting will be May 7 with a board meeting at 1 p.m. with the company meeting at 2.

Starting at $4.32/week.
