LIBRARY ARTICLE + PIC
For several months Springville residents have had the opportunity to vote for the Beehive Book Awards. This is an award given by the Children’s Literature Association of Utah for the best children’s books in four different areas. The state awards have not yet been announced but Springville’s votes have been tallied at the library and the results are as follows:
Favorite Children’s Fiction Book: “The Candy Shop War” by Brandon Mull
When fifth-graders Nate, Summer, Trevor and Pigeon meet the owner of the new candy store in town and are given a magical candy that endows them with super powers, they find that, along with its benefits, there are also dangerous consequences. For ages 10 and up.
Favorite Informational Book: “The Dangerous Book for Boys” by Conn and Hal Iggulden
This is a guidebook aimed at boys ages 8 and up. It covers about eighty topics, including how to build a treehouse, grow a crystal, or tell direction with a watch. Also included are famous quotes, stories, battles and phrases that “every boy should know.”
Favorite Children’s Picture Book: “The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians” by Carla Morris
Melvin discovers that the public library is the place where he can find just about anything–including three librarians who help in his quest for knowledge.
Favorite Children’s Poetry Book: “Cowlick” by Christin Ditchfield and illustrated by Rosalind Beardshaw
This book explains that the true cause of “bedhead” is a cow, who can’t resist giving sleeping youngsters a special cow kiss that wreaks “hair-raising” havoc during the night. Written for preschoolers.
Favorite Young Adult Book: “Hot Lunch” by Alex Bradley
When Molly and Cassie are assigned to work in the kitchen as a punishment for their food fight, they realize that the only way they are going to be released from the duty is to cooperate and learn to cook. Includes some recipes.
