MUSIC TEACHERS

By Daily Herald - | Mar 4, 2009

The Nebo Chapter of Utah Music Teachers Association will hold thheir monthly chapter meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 10 a.m. in Recital Room (basement) at Boothe Brothers Music, 135 N. Main, in Spanish Fork. The featured speaker will be Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw, BYU. He will talk about Kecak.

Kecak, popularly known as “monkey chant,” is a type of vocal music developed on the Indonesian Island of Bali in the early 20th century. As part of a dramatic depiction of the Ramayana, a Hindu epic, musicians weave together many layers of syncopated, interlocking, rhythmic chanting to form an exciting and complex sonic environment.

Grimshaw, who directs the Balinese music ensemble at BYU, will teach participants in the Nebo UMTA chapter meeting some of the intense rhythms, melodic chants and choreography involved in Balinese kecak performances.

Come ready to take off your shoes, sit on the floor and be very loud!

They thank Dr. Robin Hancock who gave a wonderful presentation last month on Rachmaninoff performer and teacher. They really enjoyed their visit with him. His insight into the life of this great composer was incredible. The different techniques Rachmaninoff taught helps all teachers see more tools they can use to help students to perform better.

If you have any questions about the UMTA organization you can visit our website a www.utahmta.org or you may call chapter president Anna Kennington, 465-9218; or our Vice President Becca Sivits, 722-4527.
