Vocal Point’s New CD “Nonstop”

By Daily Herald - | Mar 4, 2009

Winners of three Pearl Awards in 2005 and fresh off their international championship year, BYU’s popular nine-man a cappella group Vocal Point has found time to deliver an exciting, beautifully produced while continuing to fill large concert halls and performing a demanding schedule of appearances both in and out of state.

This newest CD features much of the show-stopping material and top-quality performances from Vocal Point’s first-place outing at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella at New York’s Lincoln Center in 2006.

While the Album “Nonstop” boasts the refinement and polish of a studio setting, the group manages to capture the excitement and vibe of a live show.

Director, album producer and BYU alum James Stevens, who also supplied several of the included arrangements, must be acknowledged for these great Vocal Point tracks.

Opening with an unexpectedly dramatic recreation of the THX/20th Century Fox movie fanfare, the album races on through crowd favorites such as “Spider-man Theme,” which was leaked to iTunes around the release of “Spider-Man 3,” and which has sold briskly in the world of digital downloads.

You’ll hear the group’s signature pieces such as “Thriller” and “Sunshine Medley” and also a cappella versions of two different songs called “Home.” Now only the familiar Michael Buble ballad but also a somewhat hipper “Home” by New Orleans native rocker Marc Broussard.

Back to the world of improbable themes, you’ll hear a string of them including “Super Mario” and a tribute to “Forever Plaid” with the Four Lads 1957 favorite “No Not Much,” which Stevens has turned into a tour de force that is simultaneously beautiful and hilariously over the top.
