Springville DUP coompany meets

By Judy Elsner - | Mar 9, 2009

The Springville-Mapleton Company met Mar. 5 at the Art Museum where plans were announced by Sandy Allison, Springville DUP Museum Director, for pioneer activities and an open house for the DUP Museum during the Art City Days Celebration in June.

The museum is open again after renovations were completed over the last several months. The museum is on Main Street and is open Wed., Fri. and Sat. 1 to 4 p.m.

A celebration of 108 years of the DUP organization is planned for Apr. 11 in Salt Lake City. There will be tours of the SLC DUP Museum, planting of a tree to commemorate the event and the unveiling of a portrait of Wilford Woodruff in the lecture hall. A local celebration is planned at the next Springville-Mapleton company meeting next month.

The Outreach Program was discussed, with ways to reach out to the community and particularly to schools to educate them about the history of the Utah Pioneers.

Applications are due Apr. 12 for the Royalty Pageant in SLC for the Days of ’47 Pioneer Day celebration on July 24. The Royalty Pageant itself is held Apr. 17 and 18.

Camp Hobble Creek gave the program for the company meeting. Vivian Schramm told of her experiences in Nauvoo, Illinois. She and her husband, Orville, served a mission there for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1998 as senior missionaries. She worked in the boot shop, the gun shop, the bakery and the office of the mission. Pictures were shown of the Nauvoo Temple.

Vivian felt close to the people she worked with and visitors she met there. She called them her “Family away from home.” She read a poem she wrote about her memories there. She also found that she had five separate families that lived in Nauvoo in the 1840’s in her family tree.

Those in attendance were given gingerbread man cookies similar to those from the Nauvoo Bakery. Appreciation was given to Vivian for sharing her interesting and spiritual experiences.

A thank you was also expressed to the art museum for inviting the company to meet in their nice facility.

The next camp meeting will be held Apr. 2 with the board meeting at 1 p.m. and the company meeting at 2 at the art museum. The election of officers for the company will be held.

Starting at $4.32/week.
