Utah Lake

By James Roh - | Oct 5, 2012

Prior to last week’s BYU football game, Mark asked me to go out and find a photo to go along with an article discussing the incredibly low water levels around the county.  Because the game kicked off a little after 6, I only had a few hours to get a photo and get to LaVell Edwards Stadium in time.  These types of assignments can often be fun because you’re free to roam the county looking for interesting scenes, but when you’re on a time crunch, they can quickly become stressful.

I headed over to Utah Lake State Park where the low Provo River meets Utah Lake.  While searching, I met a friendly family who was feeding ducks in the river but I felt that the photos didn’t quite work for the article because the water was hard to make out through the thick trees.  Unfortunately, aside from that, there wasn’t much going on.

Next I opted to head into Utah Lake State Park to see what else I could find.  As I approached the water, I noticed two fisherman on the lake in separate boats casting their lines.  The light blue vastness of the lake with mountains on the opposite shore made for the perfect backdrop.

I spent several minutes walking around looking for different compositions, swapping out lenses, and crouching for unique angles.  While using some tree branches to compose the frame, another fisherman walked into the water wearing waders and clutching his fishing pole.  I immediately laid on the shutter and knew that I had gotten the shot I needed.  As I rushed back to my car, I remember thinking about how grateful I am to work in such a beautiful place.  It truly makes my job easier sometimes.

Starting at $4.32/week.
