Missing Fisherman

By James Roh - | Apr 9, 2013

Last week, I was assigned to stick around at the Lindon Boat Harbor while Utah County Search and Rescue, Utah Highway Patrol and several volunteers searched Utah Lake for missing fisherman Tam Huynh.  Huynh had gone missing the previous weekend and searchers used clues to deduce that he would be in the area.

A little past noon I showed up at the harbor to replace Mark who had been there since 9am.  Sitting in the harbor with my camera and a long lens, I waited patiently for rescuers to do their job.  Friends and family of Tam Huynh gathered to wait as well.  The anticipation must have been agonizing for them.  I later spoke with friends of Huynh who were wearing waders and headed to look for him in the swampy reeds near the shore.  They explained that actively participating in the search felt better than sitting around waiting for news.

Slowly, the sun crept towards the horizon as several boats continued to meticulously comb several square miles of Utah Lake.  However, despite the best efforts of the crews over the past few days, the massive search was called off at the end of the day.

As the photographer, I was disappointed that there was no conclusion despite spending my whole day at the harbor.  However, I realize that my disappointment is very insignificant compared to those who either knew Tam Huynh or worked hard to find him.  Locating him or his body would have provided a sense of closure to those who anxiously pondered the mystery of his disappearance.  Unfortunately there have not been any updates since then.
