At the end of every sport’s season, the photographers go out and photograph players that our sport section deems as the best in the valley.  While that title is subject to opinion, it is fact that these athlete portraits, or as we call them, sportraits, are a fun way to take your time with a subject and improve your portraiture and lighting technique.

Last week I was assigned to take some photos of Britain Carter, the 2013 Wrestler of the Year.  I knew heading into the shoot that posing the photo would be my biggest challenge.  After all, you can’t really wrestle if you don’t have anyone to wrestle with.  However, Britain was very amenable and we worked around this obstacle as best we could.

During the shoot, Britain was also great to chat with as he explained the behind-the-scenes of the wrestling program at Maple Mountain and his future in wrestling.  As a senior at Maple Mountain, Britain will be heading to New York to wrestle for Columbia University next year.

After trying different angles, lenses, poses, and lighting, I was confident that I had some keepers.  Upon reviewing the photos back at the office, I felt the best action photo was of his stance just prior to attacking an opponent.

In addition, I have posted a photo of the lighting set up that was used for the portrait.  It isn’t very intricate but I felt it worked well with the subject and the very dark wrestling room.  The large umbrella placed soft light on the subject’s face while the high bare strobe filled in the backside and casted his shadow on the ground.
